Day 33, Final Weekend Package

Jul 10, 2005 01:28

Well I have made it through one day of my weekend package. The hardest part was I was 'stuck' as it were in close proximity to a lot of students as we went to La Crosse in vans. I did alright in that I didn't have any break downs or even need to leave the group ( Read more... )

We just did something with our RAs:

We set up a hardware store (I.e. the office work closet with paper, tape string, etc.) with price listed for each item ($50 for an inch of string).

Each group was given a set amount of money ($3,000) and three blank checks. They were to buy supplies from the hardware store and then construct the tallest structure.

This makes them have a game before they can start building a structure. If you need more details give me a call

I took your idea and expanded it to a week long budgeting thing. They have to keep track of a bank balance and all that good stuff.

So far I have two teams tied for the lead with 5 points and one team with 3 points. It's a close game.

The neatest thing I was able to do was sell a used piece of tin foil for (fake) $50. They got a good deal!

Dragon, Dragon, Rock the Dragon!

There are tons of experiment ideas on this PBS show called Zoom. They might be a bit simple but you can give them a look. Here's the list. http://pbskids.org/zoom/activities/sci/

A couple of days off might give you the boost to get through the rest of UB or it might give you that much more time to stew about how miserable you feel and how much you don't want to deal with the vermin ever again. It's hard to say when you hit that depression wall. I find that when I hit that winter thing that always happens to me around January, the less I do, the less I feel like doing so things pile up and get more depressing. Good luck, man. Watch your patterns of what builds you up and what drags you down and act accordingly and you'll be okay.

You know, I always found Zoom to be a fairly bad children's show. (Especially when compared to things like 'The Electric Company', '3-2-1 Contact', and 'Square 1'.) But they did have some great experiments and I think I'm going to do some of them. You and lthrgirl03 were both big helps!

Yeah, Zoom has nothing on the Bloodhound Gang or "It's a word, it's a plan, it's LETTERMAN!" but I gotta admit, it was pretty cool watching the Zoom kids build a geodesic dome out of rolled up news paper and scotch tape. Anna was heavily into Zoom for a while so I've seen more episodes than I'd care to admit.

How about Bulsa wood airplanes? make the frame with bulsa wood glued together, glue tissue to the frame. You need to find the rubberband driven propellers and landing gear...

I don't think these students (nor I) are ready for that kind of heavy building. Maybe in 5 years when we've all grown up some...

Thanks for the comment Cliffy-Cliff. Glad to hear you're still alive.

I'm right there with you, Tim. I'm feeling pushed and pulled as far as I can be pushed and pulled right now. I'm feeling about ready to snap. Each time I think I have everything in place, something else shifts, and I'm further behind than I was. SZ

Sorry I haven't been able to give you more support this Summer. I hope that you can keep on keeping on. To be honest, I have almost quit so many times this Summer. Just 6 more days and City Trip...

I hope you know that no matter what I do next Summer or beyond, you know I'll keep in touch with you and the Mrs!

Put some yeast, water and glucose in a round bottom flask and shake it up. You will need to have the bottle open a little to let any gas produced escape, but at the same time you don’t want bacteria falling into the water. You let that sit for a few days. Then you go back. You pour out the clear liquid into another round bottom flask. Heat up the liquid slowly with a heater or Bunsen burner. Then pipe that steam into a condensation tube (a cooling tub surrounding a tube with the steam in it). Then collect what you get. As long as the steam temperature is at 70 decrees Celsius then all you have is ethanol. When the steam temp is approaching 100 then you are getting water in the condensation tube. Then you can kick back and drink the product (I would suggest diluting the 200 proof alcohol). Be sure to keep an eye on the kids when they drink that stuff, nobody likes a “flat leaver”.
