My DD, almost 6 mo, has had ear infections on and off for the past month. A month ago it was both ears, treated with Amox. When checked at 10 days out she still had fluid, but no infection. A week or so later she came down with bronchiolitis (thanks, big brother in preschool...) and they found another ear infection. Round 2 of abx was cefilexin ( Read more... )

I'm assuming you meant to post this to a community, but for what it is worth, I would get her rechecked. Will your pediatrician give you a referral to an ENT? Does your chiropractor know anybody who may take a more holistic approach? I don't know what else you can do for ear infections that severe. I know breastmilk is a good cure-all, but maybe that is interacting with the antibiotics, or they are too clogged for drops to do any good? Poor girl :(

I posted to a community and to my journal - i thought it couldn't hurt to post both places to get some perspective, and also so i'd have a record in my journal too.
I'm sure if it comes to it my ped. will give me a referral, and if my friend (the PA who works with ENT's) suggests it I will certainly ask for a re-check or a referral.
I'm just hoping that by Friday there will be some signs of improvement - that would give me hope that we're at least making some progress with something we're trying.

Kids are so tricky and worrisome! I'm glad you have a friend with some knowledge. I tend to overthink everything with kids, and ask for 90th checks if things don't get better in three minutes or less.

I wish I knew what to say. I think I would go ahead and keep dosing her on Tylenol. Maybe her body can better fight disease if it's not also fighting pain. I think I would also stop treating topically with breastmilk. I think it's good for early stages, but once fluid builds up, I think it might not be as helpful (and might even hinder draining/drying). I don't really have experience with this, though - just guessing as to what I would do in your shoes.

both your points make sense... thanks for your thoughts.
i think i'm going to continue with the chiropractor for the month, and dose her with tylenol at least at night for this week, and then we'll see how things are looking.

*hugs* Sorry mama, scary.

I don't have any personal input, but I want to say that's around the age where a friend of mine's son got tubes for chronic ear infections because they were worried he'd start to get hearing damage. I know others have said this here and in p101, but I'd get a second opinion too..that's just so scary.

thanks for the input - i wasn't sure what age they started talking about tubes, but now reading more about it, they do start even earlier than 6mo.
I'll be talking to my friend on Friday, and will see how we proceed from there.

Good luck. Hope she feels better soon, and hope life gets a bit easier. That's so rough.

Poor kiddo. Poor you! According to my mom, when I was a baby I was pretty much in a constant state of ear infections. Apparently they didn't let up until I was about 2, then they recurred every winter until I was 12. My sister got them consistently through age 5 or so, when she had her tubes put in. I guess some kids are just prone. I know it's scary and frustrating right now, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! I hope you're able to find something to clear it all up!
