Prologue The lights went out and Ianto stopped what he was doing for a second until the emergency lighting kicked in.
The building shook and he held onto the shelf to steady himself as the fire Alarms blared drowning out Ianto’s question.
“What the hell was that?” Michael, the other archivist asked when the alarms stopped as suddenly as they had started.
“No idea,” Ianto replied. “Think we should evacuate?”
“It’s probably just a drill, but yeah I guess we should,” his friend replied.
They both put down the items they were filing and made their way to the exit. Opening the door into the corridor they had to take a quick step back as half a dozen unit soldiers in full combat gear hurried past. Their eyes met.
“Shit!” Michael exclaimed.
“It’s not a drill.” Ianto said grimly, his voice hoarse and accent thick.
“Come on!” Michael grabbed his arm.
“No! I’ve got to find Lisa!”
They stared at each other for a beat before Michael nodded and turned left towards the nearest fire exit. Ianto took a deep breath and headed right following the soldiers towards the noise and the stairs that would take him up to the research labs where his girlfriend worked.
As he moved he pulled his phone out of his pocket and hit the speed dial. Ianto counted the rings as he waited for the call to connect his OCD tendencies kicking in as he tried to stem his rising panic. “Come on, pick up,” he muttered as he pushed on towards Lisa’s lab.
On the twelfth ring Lisa answered “Ianto, thank God. What’s happening?”
“I don’t know. Where are you?”
“In the lab. Room L3. There’s soldiers running down the halls and I can hear shooting.”
“Right.” Ianto did a quick scan of his mental map of the building, “your nearest exit is the North corner stairwell. N2. I’m heading that way now. We need to get out of here.” Lisa’s lab was at the other side of the building on the twenty first floor.
Ianto altered his course to head for the North corner of the building, pushing open the door into an abandoned meeting room to use as a shortcut to the next corridor. As he hurried across the room a young girl stood up from where she had been cowering under the table and practically flung herself at him. “Ianto, thank God! What’s going on?”
Ianto’s mind raced searching for the girl’s name. “Charlotte!” he had spoken to her in the staff canteen that morning, made her a cup of coffee. She was new. Seventeen years old, and just started working in the accounts department. “You have to get out of here Charlotte, I don’t know what is going on, but you need to evacuate the building.”
“I’m lost. I don’t know the way out,” she exclaimed clinging to him.
Ianto gently grasped her by the shoulders and held her at arm’s length, looking into her eyes, making sure she was hearing him. “The nearest exit is back that way,” he said indicating with his head the way he had come in, “turn right down that corridor, take the second door on your left. Down that corridor, through the double doors to the stairs. The fire exit is at the bottom of the stairs.”
She nodded, wiping her tears.
“Go!” he said, giving her a little shove,
“What about you?” she asked in a small voice.
“I have to go find my girlfriend,” he answered, already starting to move off in search of Lisa.
Before he reached the other side of the room, he heard the door behind him open. Then he heard a sound like a pneumatic piston or something. Then the sound of a young girl screaming. He felt the crackle of electricity in the air and turned in time to see Charlotte crumple to the floor and the metal monster raise its head to focus on him. The door behind it opened and two UNIT soldiers entered the room in a combat crouch, pumping bullets into the metal monster who turned and faced them. Ianto ran.
Out in the corridor Ianto hit the speed dial and lifted the phone to his ear. It was answered almost immediately. “Lisa?”
“I’m ok. You?”
“Yeah. Where are you?”
“Just nearing N2 stairs.”
“I’ll be there in a minute. I’m on the second floor. Head down, I’ll see you there. I love you Lisa.”
“Love you too Ianto.”
Ianto disconnected the call and concentrated on finding his way through the maze of corridors. Everything looked harsh and lifeless in the cold bright emergency lighting. He could hear shouts and gunshots from behind some of the doors he passed but Ianto didn’t stop to see what was happening. He had to find Lisa.
Ianto answered his phone on the first ring. “Lisa, where are you?”
“I’m sorry Ianto,” Lisa sounded frantic, “I love you.”
“Lisa?” Ianto’s heart was in his mouth, “what’s happening.”
“They found me Ianto. Just get out.”
“No! I’m coming to get you. Where are you? What’s happening?” Ianto could hear noises through the phone that chilled his blood. Metallic noises and robotic joints moving. He could hear screaming and crying. It sounded like Lisa was on the verge of tears too. “Lisa, where are you?” he asked again urgently.
“Fourteenth floor. Research lab L26. There’s maybe half a dozen of them, cybermen, herding us. Twenty people. I don’t know where they are taking us,” came her disjointed reply, “East, we’re heading east.”
Just then, Ianto heard another noise that he had hoped he would never hear. If he was scared before it was nothing to how he felt now. He had read about them in the archives. The most evil monsters in the universe but he had believed them to be all but destroyed.
“Exterminate. Exterminate.”
There was a Dalek in the building.
The phone went dead in his hand and he lost his only contact with Lisa. His mind whirled with images of what was happening to her as he dragged air into his lungs and forced his legs to carry him onwards. He had to find her. Had to save her. He had no plan, but there was no way he was leaving her to die alone. They were in this together.
