I'm Late,
Accidents Happen,
He's Beautiful “Jack?” said Owen, entering the office and closing the door, “you got a minute?”
“Of course,” Jack closed the file he was reading.
“I’ve just been going over the team’s monthly blood tests. Can I get another sample from you please?”
“Uh, yeah. Why?”
“Just got some weird results and want to re-run some of the tests.”
“Weird in what way?”
Owen huffed out a short breath of laughter, “well, let’s just say if you were a woman I’d think you were pregnant.”
“What makes you say that?” asked Jack, folding his arms protectively across his chest.
“Just some hormonal imbalances. Excessive amounts of oestrogen, that kind of thing.”
Jack got a thoughtful, and slightly panicked, look on his face, “I guess it is possible…”
“Uh, sorry. What?”
“I have been pregnant before.”
“I thought that was just one of your stories! Seriously?”
“Yeah, it is possible for a man of my time. But as far as I know I would have to undergo a course of hormone injections to be able to conceive, even then it’s not easy.”
“But it is possible?”
“Yeah.”
“Then I guess we’d better do a scan, as well as re-running the bloods.”
“Yeah… can it wait until this evening after the girls go home? I need to talk to Ianto.”
--------------------------------------
“Ianto?” Jack leant on the door jamb and watched his partner loading the dishwasher, “it’s a lovely day. Come for a walk with me?”
Ianto was about to comment that unlike the Captain, the rest of the team including himself were really rather busy today, but as he turned to face his partner the snarky reply died on his lips. The look on Jack’s face was one of such open vulnerability that Ianto had never seen before and he realised that Jack’s inability to sit still today wasn’t just him attempting to avoid his mountain of paperwork, but there was in fact something wrong.
Ianto offered a soft smile, “I have to take some dry cleaning into town. How about you come with me and we can take a walk through Bute Park?”
Jack gave him a tiny smile and nodded his thanks, “Ok.”
--------------------------------------
It really was a nice day. The sun was shining and there were ducklings in the water and squirrels in the trees as they walked along the river. Jack was quiet and Ianto decided to leave him to his thoughts for the time being as he steered them through the park to a familiar spot.
When they reached the tree in the secluded clearing Ianto squeezed Jack’s hand and the older man looked around as if surprised to see they had walked so far. Since their first meeting here when Ianto had helped Jack to fight the weevil, this place had become their place, somewhere quiet to come and escape the madness of Torchwood.
Ianto turned to face his lover and brought his hand up to cup the back of Jack’s head, bringing their lips together with practiced ease. The kiss was tender, Ianto pouring all his love into it hoping to let Jack know without words that whatever was wrong he was there for him and they would get through this together. When they broke apart Ianto was smiling softly, encouragingly “so come on, tell me what’s wrong?”
Jack sighed and sat down resting his back against the bark of the tree and Ianto followed suit.
“Ok. There’s no easy way to say this.” Jack took Ianto’s hand, “Owen thinks I might be pregnant.”
Ianto was too shocked to say anything.
“I didn’t let him do the scan so I don’t know for definite. I didn’t want to know before you did. I want you to be there for the scan, if you want to that is.” Jack spoke quickly.
“I… how?” Ianto started, “I mean I know you can get pregnant, and we haven’t used protection for a long time, but I thought you couldn’t get pregnant by accident? I thought it was really difficult for you to conceive and you had to take a course of hormone injections and everything. You haven’t, have you?”
“No! I wouldn’t do that, not without talking to you.”
Ianto took a deep breath and let it out with a huff. “So what are you going to do? You always said you were never getting pregnant again. Are you going to keep it?”
Jack looked at his partner, “well that would depend on you. I can’t have a baby without you. I don’t want to have a baby without you. Do you want to become a father?”
Ianto looked back at him with a deer caught in the headlights expression.
“You don’t have to decide right now,” Jack reassured him, “I know it’s not something you’ve considered. But if we aren’t keeping it, I would rather terminate it sooner than later. I don’t think I could terminate later on, when it is definitely a baby more than just a collection of cells.” Jack was still looking worriedly at his lover.
“Wow Jack, this is a lot to take in. I mean, yes I had thought of having a family, in an abstract way, when I was with Lisa. It was something I always wanted at some point in the future, but when we got together I kind of assumed it would never happen so I stopped thinking about it. But now…. Wow, this is amazing Jack!” Ianto’s face spread into a grin.
Jack grinned back at him, “I am so pleased you think so!” the tension left his body and the relief was evident. “I never wanted to get pregnant again, but now… it’s your baby. It’s part of you, growing inside me.” Both men were grinning and looking at each other. Jack leaned in and kissed Ianto hard, pushing him to the ground and pouring all of his love into the kiss. Ianto wrapped his arms around his partner and returned the kiss and the sentiment.
Eventually they parted and sat up again. Ianto sobered, “We still need to have the scan, make sure this is for real.”
“I know. We’ll do it tonight after the girls leave.” Jack couldn’t stop smiling.
Ianto pressed a quick chaste kiss to his lips, “It’s a deal. But now we should be getting back to the Hub, we have work to do.”
Jack pouted.
“We’ll celebrate properly tonight, I promise,” Ianto said standing up and holding his hand out to pull the Captain up after him.
--------------------------------------
When Tosh eventually closed down her computer and headed home for the night Ianto climbed the steps up to Jack’s office. His heart beat quicker with every step as he realised how nervous he was. Jack met him at the door. “Have they gone?”
“Yeah.”
Jack reached for his partner and pulled him into a hug, kissing him briefly. “Let’s go and see what the good doctor has to tell us.” Jack smiled, making light of the situation, but Ianto could tell he was just as nervous as he was.
Holding hands they walked down the stairs from Jack’s office, through the main Hub and down into the autopsy bay.
Owen looked up, “I’m guessing you told tea-boy?”
“Yup.”
“Ok… well Jack, the scanner’s ready if you want to just put your hand on it there.”
Ianto squeezed Jack’s hand encouragingly before letting it go and watching with Owen as Jack slowly, reverently, lifted it to the scanner.
The three of them watched Jack’s hand as the light on the scanner came on then they turned as one to the screen on the wall. An outline image of a man appeared on the screen, and there, in the centre, was a little red dot.
“Congratulations!” grinned Owen as the other two men stared at the image, too stunned to speak.
Eventually Ianto stammered, “is it…? …. Can you tell how far along he is?” his voice full of wonder.
“Maybe two weeks?” Owen said, reading the data on the scanner.
“Can you tell if it’s a girl or a boy?” Jack wanted to know.
“Not yet. But the scans show it is healthy, whatever it is.”
Jack’s face broke into the biggest grin Owen had ever seen, as he turned to his partner, “We’re having a baby!” he said, pulling Ianto to him and hugging him tightly, then he pulled back slightly and cupped Ianto’s face in his hands, kissing him possessively on the lips, Ianto’s hands moving to encircle Jack’s back. They broke apart when Owen cleared his throat, noisily.
“You can celebrate later, when I’m at home with a much needed beer. But for now Jack, there are certain practicalities that we’re going to need to think about.”
Jack turned to look at him. He was still grinning widely but his eyes registered confusion as he struggled to take in what the medic was saying. His mind was still too busy trying to process the fact that he and Ianto were having a baby.
“You’re going to have to hire more staff. You are out of action for the foreseeable future. As medical officer I am not going to permit a pregnant man to go out in the field, and I’m guessing you won’t allow the father of your child to put himself in danger either so we’re going to be two field agents down.”
“Yeah, I’ll start looking for possible candidates first thing on Monday.”
“Good. Also, I’m going to need you to go through everything you know about male pregnancies with me. I’m kind of in the dark here.”
“Yeah ok, I know a little bit. I’ve done it before. It wasn’t easy - that’s why I swore I’d never do it again.”
Ianto put his hand on the small of his lover’s back in silent thanks that he was willing to take the chance again with him. “So, do you know how this could have happened, unplanned? He asked gently.
“Yeah, maybe.” Jack took Ianto’s hand, “remember two weeks ago we went on that tech recovery and picked up that canister which when we got it home it opened and let out that purple mist.”
“How could I forget that?” Ianto blushed and adjusted his stance to try to hide his body’s reaction as he remembered that night, “it was one hell of an aphrodisiac.”
Jack opened his mouth to speak, but Owen interrupted him before he could continue his recollections, “Oi, you’ve got an audience remember.”
Jack cleared his throat, “Right. Anyway. We thought the alien tech was just some kind of party drug, you now, make sure everyone had a good time.”
Ianto supressed a groan; it had been a very good time.
“I think now maybe I got it wrong and that’s not what it was. “
Before Ianto could form the question to ask, Jack carried on, “I think that mist not only contained a powerful aphrodisiac but it must have been loaded with hormones too. I’ve heard of these drugs being used when civilisations wanted to quickly colonise a new planet, or rebuild their populations after a particularly devastating civil war or something.”
“Makes sense I guess...” mused Ianto.
“Yeah,” muttered Jack, raising their joined hands to his stomach, “and it explains our little accident here.” He said fondly.
“Oi,” Ianto smiled, “don’t let the baby hear you call it that. You’ll give him or her a complex!”
