“You want to do what?!” Ianto practically shrieked. “You are not coming near me with any of those things Owen Harper, no way!” he shuffled away from the medic even though he didn’t have any of the creatures at the moment.
“Maggots are the best way to clean out a wound. They eat away all the dead and diseased flesh and don’t touch the good flesh. They’ve been used for centuries.”
“Not on me they haven’t,” Ianto said, panicking.
“He’s right Ianto,” Jack tried to soothe his lover. “We don’t know how much longer we are going to be stranded here. It might only be a couple more hours, but we could be here for days yet. That wound looks pretty bad. It’s going to get infected.”
“You already cleaned it with water. That will do for now, you can fix it properly when we get back.”
“Plain water won’t do. You need some form of sterilising agent like alcohol or salt.” Owen said, wondering why he was explaining this to Ianto. Surely the Welshman knew all this already. He was capable of some pretty advanced first aid. The whole team were. You never knew when there might be an emergency.
“Wash it with salt water then,” Ianto almost begged. Anything to avoid the maggots.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Do you see any salt? We’re miles from the sea.”
“Besides,” added Jack, “it would hurt like a bitch.”
“You are not using maggots!” reiterated Ianto.

Twelve hours later and the girls still hadn’t managed to trace their signals. The men were just as stranded as they had been and Ianto’s injury was getting worse.
Ianto bit his lip and scrunched his face up in a grimace of pain as Owen examined him again.
“Jack?” Owen said to the Captain and motioned for him to move a few feet away from Ianto where they could talk in confidence. “I really don’t like the look of Ianto’s leg. If I don’t clean it properly soon it is going to go septic.”
“I know,” Jack agreed, wrapping his arms around his chest defensively. He knew that as Ianto’s partner and team leader it fell to him to persuade, or failing that order, the Welshman to let them treat him.
“Maggots really are the only way…” Owen broke into Jack’s thoughts.
“I know,” Jack repeated, “I’ve used them before in field medicine. They really are useful.”
“There are hundreds of fallen apples in the orchard over the wall. I bet at least one in ten has a maggot in, it wouldn’t take long to collect them.”
“I know,” Jack said again and huffed out a sigh. “You go and get some, I’ll tell Ianto.”

“Were you talking about me?” Ianto asked as Jack returned and sat next to him.
“Yeah,” Jack said, taking Ianto’s hand. “Owen is worried about your wound. It needs cleaning. How bad does it hurt?”
Ianto considered his answer. It hurt like hell, but he didn’t want to worry Jack unduly. He also didn’t want to lie to him. “It’s not good…” he hedged, “but I can take it.”
Jack leant over and kissed him.
“We need to clean it - it’s getting infected.”
“I know,” Ianto agreed resignedly.
“Owen’s collecting some maggots now.”
Ianto tried unsuccessfully to hide his grimace of distaste.
“It’s for your own good,” Jack said as if trying to convince a child to eat his greens.
Ianto rolled his eyes. “Okay.” He acquiesced. Jack was right.

They sat in comfortable silence with an arm around each other’s waist until Owen returned with his harvest. He had found about a dozen maggots which wriggled in his hand.
Ianto turned his head away and buried it in Jack’s shoulder. He wasn’t normally that squeamish, but the thought of putting those wriggling, disgusting creatures actually inside his flesh was too much.
Jack brought his hand up to run through Ianto’s hair, soothing the younger man until he lifted his head once more and looked up at the doctor.
“Have you done this before Owen?” Ianto asked.
“Well, no… but it’s in all the text books….”
“You’ve not done it before? You want me to be your guinea pig? What if they burrow into my leg, who knows what damage they could do?” Ianto’s voice was rough as he struggled to contain his panic.
“Hey,” Jack soothed, “relax. I’ve used them a dozen times before. They are standard field medicine, and back in the old days before antiseptics and medicine we used them widely. Nothing will go wrong, I swear.”

Ianto did relax a little to the Captain’s confident and reassuring tone. He trusted him with his heart, his sole, his life and everything in between.
“Ok. Just do it Owen.” Ianto said, “But I don’t want to watch!”

Jack looked over his shoulder at Owen and nodded once, and then he cupped his hand around Ianto’s face and looked into his eyes. Jack slowly brought his face close to Ianto’s, then kissed him tenderly, his thumbs stroking across Ianto’s cheeks. As Owen examined Ianto’s wound once more Jack deepened the kiss, this tongue swiping across Ianto’s lips, begging for entrance. Ianto winced as Owen touched his sore flesh, but his pain was soon forgotten as Jack’s insistent tongue mapped his mouth and Jack’s hands tangled in his hair. Ianto didn’t even flinch when Owen introduced the maggots to his wound, he was too busy chasing Jack’s tongue with his own, his hands grasping at his lover’s shoulders.

When Owen had finished gently but firmly bandaging Ianto’s leg, Jack pulled away from the kiss, leaning his forehead against his partner’s as they both panted breathlessly. “You ok?” he asked.
“Yeah, I’m good.”
Owen cleared his throat. “I’m just going to… go for a walk…” he announced, not even sure if the other men were listening, so wrapped up as they were in each other.
Owen had seen quite enough.
