“So what did he want then?” Jacquie asked when Rose got upstairs, heading towards her room. Rose had been hoping to sneak off without having to discuss the whole conversation with her mum. But her mother’s hearing was fine tuned from her days of hearing the TARDIS come in from across the city.
“Uhm…who’dya mean?” she asked innocently.
“You know bloody well who I mean Rose! The Doctor? What did he want then?”
“Er- well he was wondering about me. And about…well just everything. Look, I gotta go.”
“Rose I’m not too blind to not see a grin peeking from behind all that. C’mon then, what happened?”
“Urm…” Rose pulled at her hair, “well…”
“He’s asked you hasn’t he?”
“Asked me what?”
“To leave.” Rose said nothing at all. “You’re going again aren’t ya?”
Rose felt like saying “what would give you an idea like that?” or some kind of denial, but she just felt she couldn’t lie to her mother anymore. Her mother and Mickey were the only ones who were there with her that were really there with her. They were the ones who, just like her, didn’t belong. She stood for a while open mouthed.
“Well?!!”
“Yeah Mum. I’m leaving again. I mean…yeah, I am. It’s just…Mum-“
“I understand Rose.” Jacquie looked so deadly serious that Rose couldn’t even speak, “Mickey’s moved on really, that Johnson girl, I’ve got Pete, and we’ve got Tami. My Rose is all alone. And I mean…if that’s really what you feel…it’s up to you all the way.”
“Th-thanks mum. I was never sure…what you felt…”
“It don’t matter what I feel silly, I ain’t the one running off to space! Only you run your own life.” She smiled, “just be careful.”
“I will mum” smiled Rose, “for you.”
“Good!” she said, “and I won’t have you blaming it on me!”
Rose headed off to her bedroom. She turned on the light and flopped down on her bed, looking up at the ceiling. What was the point of ceilings when there’s the sky? The sky was hers, everyone’s. The only thing no one could really and truly claim as their own, no one could fence off. And she would be part of it again. A kind of joy filled her heart like few people actually know.
Rose’s mind also wandered to the Doctor. She wasn’t sure how exactly she felt, but she did know one thing; this wasn’t the same man. She had to keep remembering that.
But whatever the case, she was going home to the sky. And no one was even trying to stop her. Life in general felt good.
And slowly, laying there with all the thoughts running through her head, Rose Tyler drifted off to sleep. Calmly, and happily, as she hadn’t slept in a year.
