Minutes, or hours later, she walked back to the flower shop, picked up the order, and walked home. The TARDIS was still there. She could have simply walked up to it, knocked on the front doors, and told this Doctor everything. Explained it all to him. Even a parallel doctor was still a doctor, and he wasn’t stupid. He’d understand it all.
But no. She couldn’t do it.
When she got back home it was dark. Jacquie was in the sitting room.
“Rose! Where ya been?” Rose came into the room, and brandished Pete’s flowers at her. “What’s the matter?”
Rose blinked a couple of times, trying to prevent the inevitable. But it didn’t work, she started crying.
“Oh sweetie, is it the doctor again? Dear that’s been months, get on with it.”
“No mum!” She said sobbing, “it’s not that! Not the same…”
“I know dear! I miss a lot of my friends from back home too. But you’ve got to move on. We’ve got each other, we’ve got Pete and Mickey.”
“Mum, it’s not like that!” For some reason she lowered her voice as though for dramatic emphasis or something, “Mum I saw the doctor! Only I mean…it wasn’t him, but it was…never mind, you won’t understand.”
“Rose, of course I understand. How do you think it was for me? Coming face to face with Pete again…” Rose looked away. “It’s crazy Rose. Seeing all those pictures of someone that wasn’t me when we came back here. It all is insane. But it’s alright. You’ve got to accept it.”
“God mum, you sound like me” and then she broke out in sobs again.
“But really Rose. I mean it.”
“I went down the street, and…there he was. But he didn’t know me of course, cause I was never born here, and soo…” again, her tears consumed her.
“Look at ya! Rose! Now you know the doctor wanted you to be strong! And you can be strong, you’re a good person. So why aren’t ya bein’ now?”
“Mum, to have gone the places, and seen the things I have with him, and then get back here, and know that’s all gone, is awful. But worse still is knowing that someone as wonderful as him, that you love as much as I do, doesn’t even know your name…that is hell. That is pure hell mum, and I can’t stand it!” Rose broke out in tears again.
Jacquie sat for another moment, not knowing what she could possibly say to make things better for her daughter. Not at all, and as a parent, that was one of the worst things.
“Rose…” she started.
“Mum” Rose sniffled, rubbing her eyes on her sleeve, “Mum, it’s so hard, and I just don’t know what to do!” She broke off in a violent string of tears.
“Rose, what exactly happened?”
“He was there. And the TARDIS. And I said to him that there he was and everything, and he just asked me who I was” Rose gulped “I told him, and it didn’t even strike a chord. Then some girl came up behind him, and started talking to him like she knew him, and asked who I was, and neither of them knew. Oh I gave up! So I ran. And he followed me, but I hid. Like a coward.”
“Like a coward? It has nothing to do with cowardice, love. Just calm down and I’ll fix you a cup of tea. Tea fixes everything.”
As Jacquie headed off, the doorbell rang.
“That’ll be Pete!” she said, “He was off looking for you!”
“Alright!” called Rose laughingly. She sat on the couch and considered the whole situation.
At the door, Jacquie prepared herself for Pete, having no idea of the situation.
