So, the extreme right Christians in Russia are aggresively attacking the rights of women potentially to a wide range of gynaecological medical procedures (when they go after abortion, they also often go after doctors who offer contraceptives, family planning, and related services), gay rights activists, AND proponents of pre-Christian spiritual and magical traditions. Eee-YOW! Reason no. 139 to be glad I don't live in Russia... excuse the sarcastic comment...

I wonder whether Amnesty International is monitoring this situation?

Yes, it must feel so good to live in the Land of the Free where Mitt Romney is a possible future president, right? :)

There has been actual physical police violence at protests organized by the political opposition to Putin lately. There has been an awful lot going on in Russia (not just clear-cut opposition to Putin and the ruling party, but all sorts of civil protests, much of which I can't quite understand and I don't know how to report. These arrests were very polite in comparison. *sigh*

In Soviet Russia, homosexual acts between consenting adults were a criminal offence. This is the legacy, in a Christianized package.
