the long shadows of early evening

I am in West Orange, New Jersey. To most of you out there, this is like saying, “I am in Boring Suburb, Boring State.” But I grew up in Jersey and went to college in New York, and there is a time-travel element to returning at my age. Last evening, just before the sun went down, when the shadows were long and kind, I drove through my old ( Read more... )

I enjoyed reading it very much, and I'm glad you posted it.

You've come a long way, and you deserve to publish your thoughts about the journey.

(Oh, and I've always felt that LJ especially lends itself to the long essay format, moreso than other blogging platforms, anyway.)

Thank you for giving me a chance to read that. Good fortune on your journey, out where the maps have not been drawn.

I enjoyed your "Grocer of Grantham" post, too. It reminded me of The Screwtape Letters (a book of "devilish" advice).

Hello.

Firstly, I want to say that I adore the Gates of Ivory series. That's the reason I follow your lj page, because I admire the subject, treatment and characterizations of that arc so very much. I remember being surprised and amazed when I started seeing your name in writing credits for ... Star Trek, I believe it was. Cognitive dissonance, I doubted my recognition.

Secondly and more importantly I want to thank you for your three essay posts. I read them carefully and I thought and think they are amazingly well done and extremely brave. I know you don't need validation from complete strangers but even so I need to say ... well done and thank you for your honesty, dispassion and bravery.

Thank you for your kind words. And I'm always delighted to hear the Ivory books are not forgotten!

Do not apologize for the manifesto! It is your blog, post what you like.

It's a deeply interesting piece, especially because you're very frank about the social penalties of fatness. They are real and it was a relief to read it stated flatly, so.

With a chorus like that, services at Holy Name must have attracted and held a dedicated and faithful congregation. The Church would have fewer problems today if they had kept up the old practices and allowed dancing.

I've been reading these essays slowly, savoring them. Thanks so much for publishing your manifesto. A friend of mine weighing 400 pounds had a gastric bypass and it gave her her life. I'm not going to say "gave her back" because her weight had always ruled her life. She got into the low 200s and has kept it off for over a decade.

You are such a good writer it's almost criminal. :D
