aargh.... if/when my kids go into the office... they go to work... generally errands and tasks that wear them out like running back and forth to the vending machines to get snacks for co-workers...

I would think that is something that you can ask your coworker to keep quiet, insomuch, yes, give the kid headphones, especially if it's disturbing you. Any respectful person would do so.
