after thinking over things i had a slight adjustment to the idea.
The mad dash.
A race between creations of unconventional man powered vehicles, with the aim of being the first to reach the finish line.
All vehicles must carry at least one person, must have working steering, brakes and a means of propulsion, be it chain driven, foot power, hand crank whatever. The vehicle must also be amphibious, as part of the course shall include a water obstacle.
The vehicle may not possess an engine, motor or other form of propulsion (such as sails) that are not manually operated.
For the purposes of safety no vehicle may be fully enclosed to allow its crew to abandon it if need arises. Safety gear such as helmets and life vests are to be worn at all times during the race.
i think this is more in keeping with the spirit of kiwi ingenuity.
as yet, the distance to be covered hasn't been established, though given the ingenuity of most people we might look at a kilometer or two, with a river or lake in the way to make things interesting.
So far this is an idea i have thrown out for speculation, but if people would seriously consider such a race we could make an event of it next year?

What is the distance to be covered?
via land and via water?
also do you preclude aerial vehicles, due to the amphibious rule, or can they just have floats?
