They're not too uncommon here, (supposedly we're the one state outside of Tornado Alley that gets the most) but usually they're so small and weak (or waterspouts out on the coasts) that no one really pays attention to them.
Come to think of it, the only natural disasters that aren't typical to Florida are landslides (being that land usually has to have an incline to slide down, and since we're at/below sea level, well...) and volcanoes. (Believe it or not, even earthquakes come through here occasionally. They're barely detectable, but earthquakes nonetheless.)
