So, how about that 365 Main, eh?

Gotta love major co-location centers that don't have their act together, power-wise. As a spokesman for Equinix commented, "...about 70% of all data center cost is the power infrastructure..." Obviously, they screwed up. Heads are probably rolling as we speak, and I'm sure the corporate lawyers are (rightfully) queuing up to sue for the millions ( Read more... )

Especially doesn't look good for Sun when they can't keep their own site up.

I'm actually surprised they didn't have better distribution of their site, honestly.

Funny that LJ moved down there, and you guys moved up here. I know the reasons behind it, but still. (:

No kidding. I'm honestly surprised that there're any hosting sites within SF city limits, just due to the cost if nothing else. I'd expect them to all be 50 miles out, in the middle of nowhere. They're usually big enough to warrant their own data feed, and though that would probably cost more, it's probably not nearly as much as the difference in real estate and other utility costs...

In four years with Inflow, I had about 11 seconds of downtime due to provider-related issues.

According to 365's release, it took their technicians a fucking hour to start the generator. I can manually start up the generator on our building in about two minutes, and most of that time is just walking over to the electrical room. So either they have their heads up their asses and don't pay attention when the power condition is sub-optimal, or they have their heads up their asses and are running a bunch of broke-ass generators.

I think the problem in this case was the reason the generator didn't start in the first place, actually.

My husband works for SL and he said 365 Main didn't fail on them. The power outage didn't affect the "world". Of course, SL didn't put all their eggs in one basket. They have servers in other locations given San Francisco is prone to natural disasters.

We've hung out with the founder and a bunch of other folks from 365 Main once. They're good guys who took a really big risk to make their own company and are really happy that it has become successful. They love talking about their work and what they do and I got a good impression that they will do what it takes to keep their customers happy. I feel bad for them that this happened.

Interesting. So it might've just been certain banks of their servers that went down, then? Makes sense. I'm sure they've got more than one generator...
