Gankutsuo: The Count of Monte Cristo

One of my favorite books. Of course, in this adaptation there's demonic possessions and space travel and stuff, but then there's that word, adaptation. Animation's fucking trippy awesome, too. Some of the patterns make me think of Mononoke.

video, anime

I saw the first episode today. Fantastic, though sometimes YouTube quality subtitles forced me to summarize the gist of what was being said, but that didn't put a damper on what was going on (or teh colorz!!!) too much.

I can see the Franz-philia, haha.

I have it...

The patterns!

Mononoke is more subtle, with most of the patterning looking like paper rather than *PATTERN*

I watched Episode 1 today on YouTube. And you're right, Mononoke is more subtle; I suppose it'd have been more accurate to compare it with Chowder (I don't know if that would be familiar to you; it's a show on day-time Cartoon Network), though Gankutsuou definitely employs it a lot more, but it doesn't bother me at all like I've heard it does some people. It's a big colorful aesthetic orgy!

... Oh, yes, and the story so far is good. I see they're approaching the plot in a nonlinear narrative unlike the book, but I have no problem with that, either.

While I did not like that book at all, I admit that the movie there looks pretty fantastic. So pretty! And I like the futuristic thing.

YouTube it; I started watching it today. It's interesting how casual the outer space thing is, they hardly seem to notice it other than Oh, Luna is a good vacationing planet, or Ah, the Count, some people think he's a vampire or even an alien from outer space. So I think it's sort of ... rustic--though since the characters are aristocrats, maybe that's not the best word choice--futuristic, like in Samurai 7 or Wolf's Rain.

Oh, good, I do adore when people don't feel the need to hammer home the rules of their world and just let us figure it out. I'm definitely YTing. Maybe tonight even, as I don't have much homework.

I like it so far, though I've only watched the first episode so I'll hold off strong judgment until later.
