Here's something: The guy who wrote it fought in a war and felt that in that war people did things to each other that were terrible. And he felt that inside people was this darkness that the systems of civilisation etc that we impose on it hide but it's always there.
And on this island the inner savagery that is at the heart of man is able to come out as civilisation disintegrates. Civilisation is symbolised by the shell that they use to keep order at their meetings - remember how it breaks?
