I haven't been to Mount Vernon since grade school, but I visited Monticello two years ago and it's a gorgeous area. If you've got the time, you might like to detour along Skyline Drive through Shenandoah for a bit -- it's not far off the highways. There are also some great wineries around Charlottesville and an orchard right at the top of the hill where Monticello is. If you like architecture, the original campus of UVA is neat.
Both Mount Vernon and Monticello are gorgeous, although I've never been when it's this hot, and there is a lot of walking involved if you really want to get a feel for them. If you can, I recommend taking the George Washington Parkway down to Mount Vernon. There are faster ways of going, but it's the prettiest. And if you stop in Alexandria along the way, you could come hang out with me in one of the zillion cool restaurants in my neighborhood. :) There's also the Woodlawn plantation and Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope Leighey House quite close to Mount Vernon, although google tells me the Woodlawn house itself is currently closed for renovations. The Wright house and Woodlawn's grounds are pretty though!
Yeah, I don't want to go when it's this hot. I'd much rather wait until the autumn, when I'm sure it will be gorgeous. But if I have to move before the autumn, I don't want to miss out. So whether I go or not will probably depend on how well this interview today goes!
If I do go, I'll let you know, since I'd love to meet up!
if you need a place to sleep near Mt. Vernon my place is just across the river! alas, no boat service, but it's a 30 minute drive (not in rush hour) from Accokeek to Mt Vernon.
and, Monticello is in such a beautiful part of VA! Jefferson is so inspiring. Mt Vernon is great, too... they've done lots with grounds and gardens and the view from there is almost like it was in 1776.

I was actually thinking of spending the night in Charlottesville, to minimize my driving on the second day, but I will keep your offer in mind.
