Ah, that's disappointing. I felt this way about a book and its sequel- Ariel and Elegy Beach by Steven Boyett. I really really loved the first book, Ariel. Decades later found out there was a sequel, and while it was good, so much of it just felt like the same story arc told with slightly different characters. A tad disappointing that way.
I'm really looking forward to reading the last two books next year or so. I enjoyed the first two so much, I feel like I wasted the second two by reading them too soon after.
I enjoyed Paladin's Grace as a put-brain-in-neutral read. Since that was fun, I am now reading Swordheart and it is way too "samey." Unfortunately, I have Paladin's Strength waiting. I've decided to read for concepts (dead god, different religious systems, living magical sword, etc.).
I really, really love the dead god idea, I wish Kingfisher had done more with it than just have it be a source of angst.
Apparently Swordheart is "samey" to the point of having some of the same minor characters in the same role. I am really curious about the magical sword, but I'm going to wait and give it some time so hopefully I can forget the previous books as much as possible.

I wonder if the authors realize they're doing it? Or if they don't realize they're following the same formula over and over...

I do enjoy her as a writer, but yes, with the romances, I can't read too much at once for *just* that reason.
