This one is going to be more of a non-event than anything else, I fear, but I have set myself to respond to these prompts, so...
1) Do you try to see all the nominees for Best Picture each year before the Academy Awards show?
No. I don't even know when the awards ceremony is, but I imagine it must be close. I will take note of Oscar wins after the event, because they are an indication that a film is well made, as are BAFTAs and all the other various medals and prizes.
2) How many of this year’s nine Best Picture nominees have you seen so far?
Umm... I actually had to google them *g* I've heard a lot on the radio about La La Land. I'm not sure it is DJ's thing, but I'll probably order it from Lovefilm anyway because it sounds like it might be fun.
3) Of those nominated films you’ve seen, which is your favourite?
*g* And again. Of the 9, I think there are 3 I will certainly want to see once they come out on DVD: Arrival, because I love to see SF done well on film. Lion; because I have heard that is really good, and the premise intrigues; and La La Land, as I've said.
I am not attracted by grim, violent or emotionally tense films. And a film has to be very good for me to watch a main character spiralling down into chaos at the mercy of circumstances beyond their control. No matter the setting, it is tales of the individual taking hold of their lives and the situation they find themselves in that attract.
4) Is your favourite the same as the film you think is actually the “best picture”?
I can't answer this question because I have no reference points.
5) Which film do you think will win Best Picture?
From what I've heard, it is probably going to be La La Land. In times of bad news, it is nostalgia and escapism that people love; a chance to get away from reality for a couple of hours. But not having seen any of them, I can't judge their relative quality.
Okay, not quite such a non-event as I feared. That is what I am finding enjoyable about these prompts - even when they don't obviously apply to me and my life, they still give me something to think and post about.
