This morning I trudged up the hill in the snow (the car is broken) to campus to pray with a few Native students for the San Francisco Peaks.   The Navajos, knows these mountains as Doko'oosliid, or Abalone Shell Mountain, and hold them sacred as the western boundary of the land Creator gave to them.  I learned this morning that traditionally they ( Read more... )

I didn't get very far in this book this week, only about 20 pages.   That's partly because it's a tough read, and partly because I'm not really enjoying reading it.   So much of it is way over my head.   It's like trying to pick up a Microbiology textbook and make my way through it, when all I've studied thus far is high school Bio.    Quite often ( Read more... )

Native/Indigenous thinkers go about theology in a way that is entirely different from Western thinkers.   It's not just that their conclusions are different; their starting points, and the paths they take, are different as well.    What sounds testimonial or missiological or historical to my Western mind is clearly theological to theirs ( Read more... )

A few years ago I made a resolution to read all of CS Lewis' books.  (In fact I think I might've blogged that resolution.)I don't think I knew at the time just how many books there were, and I always overestimate my reading speed/ability.   So it's taken longer than I expected, but I'm nearing the end.   I keep coming across obscure collections of ( Read more... )

My sister gave me this book a few years ago, probably thinking that I liked Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  Truth is I've never read anything by Bonhoeffer, not even "The Cost of Discipleship,"  which seems to be on some list of required reading for thinking Christians.   And so this book has sat on my shelf untouched, until my resolution this year to read ( Read more... )
