It didn't matter so much anymore that, in the film, it hadn't been Jim's child that Karen was pregnant with. Too much of what Pam had seen had been a shock that she was left stil reeling as she made her way back to Jim's hut, hoping, for once, that Sam would be being watched by someone else. She didn't know yet what she had to say, but she had to ( Read more... )

Jim had just finished putting Sam down for a nap when he heard the door open and close. He popped his head out of her room and smiled when he saw who was there.

"Hey," he said, crossing over and leaning forward to press a kiss against her head. When he pulled back was when he finally noticed something was a little off somehow. "What's up?"

"I just saw Karen," Pam blurted out before she could stop herself, unable to help looking a little nervous now that he was there in front of her. It wasn't even just like admitting in front of everyone how she felt about him. The history was different, for the both of them. "In the rec room, watching..." Gesturing idly with one hand, she trailed off. That, at least, didn't need much more explanation. After a brief pause, though, she added somewhat abruptly, "She was pregnant."

Even if it hadn't been Jim's baby -- and if Karen knew what happened, he had to have known, too, and just hadn't said anything -- the only thing she knew to do was to be direct about it. She could work up to her point, and if she was going to do this, which she had to, that was the only way.

Jim's breath caught in his throat. She'd seen it too? He found his stomach almost twist at the thought. He'd kept parts of what he knew about them in the future secret for a reason. He never felt right telling her things that could make her feel like he expected anything from her. To find it out this way, though -

"Oh," he said, because it was the first thing that came into his head. It was probably a bad response to all of it. "Yeah, I - I know about that."

Beyond that, he didn't know what to say - because he didn't know what Karen told her. The reel didn't have the show credits, that much he knew. It didn't mean she didn't know about it from her, though. He'd wait to say more.

The response puzzled Pam, but not enough to stop her. If she did that, she would wind up rethinking all of this, and she couldn't do that. She'd kept quiet once, and it had only wound up hurting her in the end. They were doing things right this time -- like, apparently, they were back home, too.

"You do?" she asked, genuinely curious, but didn't dwell on it. Beyond what her initial thought had been, that wasn't the important part. "So... so you know we got engaged back there, too." That maybe wasn't the ebst way to address it, but he had to know by now that she wouldn't have asked for anything. And maybe that was part of her problem. Either way, she wasn't just letting this go.
