Are you actually talking about a Romanization system?

Thomas Wade died in 1895. Herbert Giles died in 1935.

Where did you think Wade-Giles was living?

Wow, and when I initially read this, I was thinking this was a recent development. Like, "crap, first Evel Knieval and Wade-Giles? Where is all the excitement in our lives going??"

Hey, Wade-Giles was used in legitimage academic publications even less than ten years ago. (No matter that these were published by older scholars.) The fact that I have to use Pinyin now just because the commies have won makes it a recent development.

Heh, but that /was/ the effect I was going for.

Okay, that makes more sense. I'll light an extremely tiny candle for Wade-Giles. But I probably won't make rice for it, because last time I did that I forgot about the rice until it evolved slightly further than rice is supposed to in the course of being eaten. I don't think this is because my grandmother did not finish dinner, but because her eating it somehow allowed it to take on new life...which is even damn scarier. And now I have to go to bed. Oh crap.
