Day One - Scary Egyptian Bitches

Oct 01, 2008 23:05

So I've been getting into the habit of overworking myself once again. "NO FUN. WORK ONLY. YOU CAN'T RELAX UNTIL YOU'VE DONE YOUR HOMEWORK. FOR THE WHOLE SEMESTER."

That's not good.

I'm making various efforts to chill out, including trying out this 31_days deal. Figured it would be good to make myself write for myself once in a while. (Then I might get around to writing for other people, too!)

First off the block, we have Silvermoon goodness.

Title: All For the Best
Day/Theme: October 1st/waiting in the wings
Series: Silvermoon
Characters: Beryl, Medes, touch of Sakeres

The late afternoon sun hit the high windows at a low angle, shining like a spotlight on the transparent fabrics that partitioned Akhet's chambers. They fluttered slightly against the backdrop of the warm, earthen walls, giving the room an otherworldly appearance.

The effect was completely lost on Medes.

"The women are sequestered for the duration of their cycle," she read, pacing back and forth with a book in hand, "and are only allowed contact with- Akhet, are you listening to me?" Medes slammed the book shut and concentrated on boring holes into the back of her daughter's head with her kohl-lined eyes.

"AKHET?"

"My silence was supposed to be an indication that no, I am not listening." She bent over her vanity, tying something together. "I don't really care about the backwards superstitions of our neighbors. It's useless trivia."

"You are wrong, my dear. Nothing could be more useful. People aren't ruled by lords; they're ruled by their fears. Our neighbors isolate their women during their menstrual cycle. It's a clever way to keep track of parentage hiding behind a ridiculous taboo. How do you think I knew their heir apparent is not of the King's blood? Why do you think they were suddenly so willing to trade with us?"

"Can't you use your magic mirror for that?" asked Akhet, still bent over the vanity.

"Scrying only works if you know what to look for!" Running out of patience, Medes stormed across the room to Akhet and peered over her shoulder. "A necklace? Why in the name of Hajwet are you making a necklace? I didn't even know you could tie a knot."

"It's for Weskhet," she answered softly, oblivious to the insult.

Medes snorted and walked away. "Ridiculous. If you really want to do something useful for your brother, you'll focus on your studies. You wouldn't want him asking some other member of the court to scry for him, would you?"

"Weskhet is above such tactics," said Akhet, adding volume to her voice. "He is not concerned with watching every body's every move-"

"Which is exactly why he won't last more than a year."

Akhet shrieked, and before Medes could turn around a bottle of scented oil flew past her ear and shattered against the wall.

"SHUT. UP."

Medes gazed at her daughter with well-concealed fear, bracing herself for another outburst. Akhet just panted, and sighed, and snatched the finished necklace off the table as she stalked out of the room.

Hours later, Medes was pacing through her own chambers, a lone candle illuminating her path. Her companion was content to kneel in the shadows.

"We have to move forward quickly. She's useless as she is now. And she knows it's coming, deep down. She's not stupid. We can't let this linger overhead; it could cause permanent damage. I want him dead within the week."

"I am here to serve you, my lady."

"YOU ARE HERE TO SERVE AHA PESU." In sudden fury, Medes turned on the man and caught his jaw with her hand, pulling his chin up and meeting his eyes. "It just so happens that I know what is best for Aha Pesu. I am not a megalomaniac with delusions of grandeur. I am merely a conduit for a higher order."

Her face softened, and she stroked his jaw with her thumb. "Smile, Sakeres. Soon you'll be serving the mother to the Heir of the Great House. Won't that be lovely for both of us?"

I like Akhet. She's so unlike any other character I've played (read: she is a mofo psycho-naut).
