Day Two - Gold and Silver Shine

Oct 02, 2008 23:39

I saw a B-52 AND a B-1 bomber flying over the museum today. :D :D :D Emoticons alone cannot express my joy at this. I've been waiting to catch a B1 flying into the air base for a YEAR. It was amazing. It shook the whole building.

And another ficlet!

It's funny: just this evening my grandmother was telling me that Great Great Grandfather Tomanek - who crossed the Atlantic from Bohemia to America all on his lonesome when he was only nine years old - used to scold her for not speaking Czech. Maybe I'm making up for that just a little. XD

Title: Put It in the Ground
Day/Theme: October 2nd/shiny happy people
Series: Angels
Characters: Ivona (Zeruel), Alexander (Metatron), Zdislav, Bohdan (Tirashel)

A cool summer breeze wafted through Ivona Tomanek's garden, fluttering blossoms and office paper. She took a sip of her lemonade and leafed through Archon's quarterly reports: they were so far in the black that they looped around to red and back to black again.

Indeed, life simply didn't get any better than this.

"Čau Matek!"

"Čau Matek!"

Zdislav ran past with a jar of coins, followed closely by Bohdan with a jar of gum drops.

"Čau děti," she muttered, waving while still staring at the reports.

"Čau Matek!"

"Čau Matek!"

They ran back inside, sans jars.

"Čau děti."

"Čau Matek!"

Zid ran by with a jar of paperclips.

"Čau Mat- OOF."

Bohdan tripped as he ran by, dropping his jar of jelly beans and soundly headbutting the Earth. Ivona, eyes still glued to the reports, pulled him up by the neck of his shirt and planted his feet back on the ground.

"Thanks! Čau Matek!"

"Čau děti."

It wasn't until she heard the ominous sound of shoveling that she looked up to see Zid and Bohdan digging in the dirt at the far end of the garden, following their father's lead. She heard Zid's voice pipe up. "How long do you think it will take them to grow?"

"Between one and ten thousand days, I would guess."

Ivona sighed, placing her report under a rock on the table and pulling herself out of her chair. She strode across the garden and stopped to loom over her cherubic, spaced-out excuse for a husband. "And what exactly are you doing?"

"I'm planting a penny tree!" yelled Zdislav, waving his trowel triumphantly in the air.

"Are you, now? Wouldn't a euro tree be more profitable?"

"This one will look nicer."

"I see." She crouched down next to Alexander. "And you?"

He held up the jar of jelly beans and offered one to her with a smile.

"No thank you, I think I'll wait for the harvest. Perhaps instead you could tell me why you are poisoning our children's minds with abiogenesis."

"Because I knew it would get you out of your chair."

Ivona looked taken aback for the briefest second, before recovering and smirking at Alex.

"I think I like you better when you are being cryptic. Why don't you go sit in the bird bath?"

He shifted his gaze to his boys, who were dropping coins and gumdrops into the dirt with great focus. "Because sometimes I prefer to be in one place at a time."

"And there it is!" said Ivona, throwing her hands up in exasperation as if she weren't already perfectly fluent in Metatron. She didn't notice Zdislav creeping up behind her until he plucked a few hairs from her head. "OW. What do you think you're doing??"

He started backing up, hairs in hand, grinning mischievously at her. "I'm going to plant these in the ground and grow a whole new Matek."

"I'll plant YOU in the ground!" She lunged for the giggling child and held him in a theatrical headlock. Zid grabbed her arm, and with an exaggerated cry she fell to the ground, the Angel of Might forfeiting a fight for the first time in millennia.
