Humans usually can't see it because they usually can't deal with the fourth wall.

The status screen is where you can see your stats, like your strength and intellect. You can also watch your current skill levels...my, that's quite a high engineering skill!
Oh, you can also check if you are poisoned and such.

The status screen is just what it says, a screen that tells your status. Usually pressing Start opens it.
