Ichigo had done some stupid, stupid things in the past. He was still firmly in Watanuki's Top Five Stupidest People of All Time, and was probably in the top three on that list. Knowing Ichigo was an exercise in tolerating stupidity, and had been since the first day they'd met. But this was a whole new level of stupid.

Watanuki hadn't even heard about the whole affair until some hours after the contest had ended. With the deep concentration required for his cooking and the looming spiritual presence of his unexpected assistant, he'd had not a glance to spare for the audience, and hadn't noticed the fight at all. He'd had to hear about it from someone else - and before he'd even made a conscious decision to go, he was planning in his head what he was going to say to Ichigo when he visited his cell.

Things had been awkward between them since their conversation at the flower-viewing area a week or two before. They'd managed not to see much of each other since then, keeping busy with Hanami events and contests; but this bout of

...it could always get worse, Ichigo remembered belatedly. He'd nearly forgotten -- things could always get worse. Moving up to stand by the bars, the pilot stared at Watanuki's irate figure. He hadn't really thought about what Watanuki's reaction to this whole thing would be.

"I got in a fight," he explained, far too calm and matter-of-fact for someone who was currently in prison.

Thought about Watanuki's reaction? Yeah, it didn't seem that a whole lot of thinking had gone into this on Ichigo's part in the first place.

"I KNOW YOU GOT IN A FIGHT!" Watanuki bellowed, flinging his unburdened arm in the air and stabbing a finger at Ichigo accusingly. "They told me you got into a fight! WHEN THEY WERE TELLING ME THAT YOU WERE IN PRISON!" He set the down the bag on the floor beside him (it landed with a thump that implied a full container of something inside), the better to use both arms in his enraged gesticulation. "You got into a fight at a cooking contest! What the hell is wrong with you?! Every time I look away you do something stupid!"

Ichigo flinched away from the yelling, shutting one eye. Okay, this was more like the Watanuki he remembered. Instead of the awkward and the talking-about-difficult-things and the stupid smiling, Watanuki was giving him what for over something that wasn't worth this level of anger about. He felt some of the tension leave him as he griped back, "Oh, shut up. The guy was asking for it."

He pointedly ignored Shinjiro in the cell opposite.
