Annoyed was possibly an understatement to describe the general emotion for Hijikata at that point of time.

More than annoyed, he was pissed off, irritated, frustrated and annoyed at the whole situation in general. Usually Kristoph's words meant little to him since it would be forever and a half before he could actually trust the damned quartermaster, but this time it was hard to simply turn away from his words. Edgeworth was still missing after all, and as sly as he was even the blonde wouldn't go and slash his own neck in order to frame the first mate ( ... )

Phoenix turned around quickly when he heard the familiar voice. "Major Hijikata!" he said, remembering belatedly that he had a twin. "Or is it Major Mustang?" He couldn't tell -- and so far, he'd guessed wrong every time. But it was usually Hijikata who called him "reporter" in that deadpan tone of voice, so his first guess was probably correct. "What're you doing here?" he asked, well aware that Hijikata could ask him the same question.

Just his luck to run into Hijikata when he was trying to do something serious. He wondered what Hijikata would ask him to do this time. Although, come to think of it, Hijikata hadn't done anything the last two times they'd met, at the races and when they'd found Edgeworth. Maybe this streak of not-threatening-to-throw-Phoenix-overboard would hold? Truth be told, Phoenix wasn't sure what to think of the boatswain.

The samurai resisted every urge to roll his eyes at the identity question. Honestly, one would have thought his demeanour would have given him away... "Its Hijikata." He made a mental note to do something about all this annoying twin situation later on when he had the chance.

Back to the main situation at hand though. The boatswain only crossed his arms, looking as deadpan as he always was even at the question. "I could ask the same for you." He had of course came here in order to look for clues regarding the whole assassination attempt on the quartermaster. Even if the attack was clean, there could be still traces... nobody could be so skilled and so, well, perfect. Every human had their flaws - Hijikata knew that better than anyone else.

So he was right. That was a small comfort, at least. Should I tell him the truth? Phoenix wondered. He considered replying with an I asked you first, but something told him that now was not the time to push it. "I'm looking for clues," he replied finally. "Anything that might show who the attacker was."

"I know the attacker himself wasn't Edgeworth. If he had been, Mr. Gavin would have said so. But Mr. Gavin seems to think that Edgeworth ordered the hit. If I can find out who the assailant was, maybe I can trace him back to whoever's really behind this." He was determined to find out, especially since he felt like Edgeworth wasn't repsonsible. He couldn't say for sure -- and had to admit that it was pretty suspicious that the man was nowhere to be found -- but Phoenix had a hunch that there was more to this than met the eye.

And those hunches were usually right.
