He had been leading some of the miners towards the medical tent when the second collapse happened. The sound of the falling rocks was ringing in his ears when he turned, only to see the kicked up dust and smoke and people yelling and screaming...

It didn't take long for him to realize there was still some of his crewmates in there.

And he couldn't find Naoto anywhere.

Souji was normally a very calm young man, and he still WAS calm at least in appearance. But there was a tremble in his hands as he started working with the shovel again, and his eyes seemed a little too shiny. If Naoto anyone died because he couldn't dig fast enough...

Yuri had been helping move people out of the first cave-in when a low rumble of earth signaled the second collapse. He had just dropped off another injured miner and sprinted back to the cave.

Fuck, Yuri thought inelegantly. There were still people down there. There had been kids helping out - they had to be ok.

And if they weren't, well, he'd just dig until they were.

He caught sight of Souji in the low light of the cave and grabbed a nearby shovel. Yuri didn't say anything, only moved in beside the younger man and started digging with him.

Souji looked up at the Captain for just a bare moment, but in that few seconds a look of pure gratitude washed over his face. He just... couldn't do this alone, and that alone was hurting him. Of course, Yuri's crew was in there, so it was expected that he'd help, but still...

Souji nodded, working even harder now that he had backup, not needing to say anything.

Yuri didn't shake - he couldn't, there were things to be done and he didn't have time for weakness - in any sort of worry or fear, but he couldn't help the way his face tightened into a determined grimace, part scowl, part troubled furrowing of his eyebrows. He paused when his shovel hit a particularly large piece of rock and bent down to remove the offending stone.

"Who was left in there?" he managed, tersely, but still with an undertone of calmness.

After hearing the announcement, Grell quickly stopped chatting with the townsfolk, trying his hardest to get information on the guy, but failed, and quickly rushed to the mines to get people out. And surely, having many lives lost by the raining storm of boulders and rocks sounds very unpleasant for those who live in this frosted town ( ... )

Although she wasn't sure she'd be much help - she wasn't exactly all that powerful physically - Naoto had gone down to the mines to help dig the trapped miners out. She couldn't leave people in need, after all. She helped move some of the smaller rocks and stones and get some of the rescued people outside to safety.

She had just headed back into the mine to help some more when the second cave in happened, throwing her off her feet and trapping her inside the mine. She nearly panicked, but the rational side of her told her that would do no good. Naoto checked herself for injuries, a few scrapes and scratches here and there, but her left knee was in pain. She could still get up and walk, but she'd have to limp around.

She considered herself lucky. It could have been far worse.

Getting up, she looked around, but saw only darkness, but heard a familiar voice echo in the mine.

"Grell!?" she called out. "Is that you?"

He touched his glasses, having his finger going through the empty frame. Oh, these glasses were expensive, but surely he can get them repaired soon. Until then, he can deal with a little blurred vision.

However, after he heard that familiar voice, which sounds it shouldn't be far, his attention moved back to the pure empty and dark space. He would have to get up and try to get closer, but trying to stand up with a back in pain isn't a good idea. Moving too much in any way will make it worse anyways, so he should just stay where he was. But, staying in one spot won't finish anything! He put his hands on the wall, pushing into it as he slowly moved up.

And it almost like more rocks are stabbing into his back, making him complain a little. He leaned on the wall some more, continuing to stare at the dark area.

"Naoto?!" he answered back. "It's me! Are you alright?"

So it was Grell! It was somewhat comforting to have someone she knew in there with her, but it also meant that he was trapped as well. And he could be injured as well. Naoto had to find him, but stumbling around in the dark wasn't going to make it easy. Still, she slowly pushed herself to her feet and started to slowly, carefully, limp in the direction of Grell's voice.

"I'm slightly injured, but otherwise fine," she replied, squinting in a vain attempt to be able to see in the darkness. She fumbled around a bit until she found a wall of the cave, putting one hand onto it to help guide herself. She didn't know which way she was going, just that Grell was somewhere over there. If only there was a bit of light! "What about you?"

Milky Rose jumped from the top of a cliff and landed on her feet. Even though she'd come with perfectly laid plans just like always, once the rock shelf collapsed again, she forgot about making a good impression or showing up the rest of her crew or even the fact that she probably needed to be careful because there was an airship full of mercenaries right there and she was supposedly some kidnapper and thief. (Well, only the stealing had really been true, and the Lumiere family hadn't publicized it that much on the mainland, but...) There was only one thing to think.

She moved to an area where boulders too big for a normal person to move had blocked off the way. "Who's in there?"

There was no answer for a moment. Then came the fighting cry of someone charging towards the boulder: "HAAAAAAAAAAAY-YAA!"

This was punctuated by the sound of something impacting against one of the boulders. However, it did not seem to move or crack, and there was little effect other than some sand and pebbles being shaken down from further up.

It seemed like, some way or another, Jean always ended up in caves. Whether it was traveling into underground burrows to rescue people, or taking odd routes for the mountains, she had spent more of her life spelunking than she had on airships.

Milky Rose blinked. Who was back there? "Hold on, all right? Keep hitting it!" She struck out with her fist and cracked the boulder with the force, and, were it plausible, would be cursing the fact that her powers were nerfed for the purpose of the game so she couldn't do this. "We can keep going!"

"Is that you, Milk?" Jean's voice replied, muffled by the stone. "... all right! We'll crush this rock together! Blue Dragon... PALM!"

This time, the cracking on Jean's side was loud enough to be heard from Milk's side.

Somehow, it all seemed oddly befitting, if not in an entirely ironic manner ( ... )

For Yoruichi, the cave in was just another set of variables one had to think through. She was tense, and the tension expressed itself through alertness. Whatever feelings of compassion might be natural to her as a person had been brought to obedience long ago. Now they remained silent, recessed to the farthest corners of her mind. Compassion was a dangerous thing for a person trained to make life and death decisions, and Yoruichi accepted that. It was her duty.

The mass of dirt and stone in front of her was a puzzle, and Yoruichi worked from the top to pluck out stones, trying not to move them in such a way that more tumbled down at her as she tried to open an air hole.

She looked sidelong at Shion working next to her, wondering what the woman was thinking. But she didn't ask, instead she offered her flask of water to the pre-occupied and dust covered woman.

"Here," she said. "Drink some of this."

With only the rhythmic sounds of metal crunching against dirt, followed shortly by the staccato tumble of pebbles, the sound of another's voice was a welcome change from the monotony. While it did arrive unexpectedly, it was much like stumbling across an oasis within a desert. A befitting figure of speech, she soon realized, as she noticed the emergence of a flask out of the corner of her eyes. Slowly coming to a halt, Shion let the shovel's handle rest in one hand as she shifted to face the woman, the gravel scrunching lightly underneath the movement of her boots. She would've struggled to rasp out her appreciation, but before she knew it, her fingers gingerly curled around the container to bring it to her dry lips. It felt like a cool finger gliding over her tongue and down her throat, applying salve that eased away the dust that threatened to burn through her pharynx ( ... )

Yoruichi took the proffered flask and gave Shion a look that was about as kindly as her looks got, which was only a very small easing about the eyes.

"Just pace yourself," she said. "If you push too hard in the beginning you'll blister your hands and it will be much harder for you to dig after that."

The dust didn't bother Yoruichi especially, for she was used to a certain amount of it from the training grounds. If it did she always had the- oh.

Yoruichi removed the white cloth from around her neck and handed it to Shion. She would have to get it back, it was not exactly as what it appeared, but in the meantime the other woman could make better use of it.

"Put this over your nose and mouth if the dust gives you too much trouble," she told her.

Kamina couldn't remember where he was upon waking up. There had been lots of cold and then a warning from over the network about a--a mine! The collapse! People were still waiting to be rescued! He bolted upright and immediately fell backwards, too dizzy to move. "That's right," he said quietly. There had been a second cave-in. And he was trapped ( ... )

Tarzan leapt ahread of Hughes for the moment, quickly going into the tunnels of the newly opened shaft. He thought he heard a faint voice within. Had they not gotten everyone out.

He scaled the walls, grabbing as many footholds as possible, Tarzan raced down the shaft.

Hughes started when Tarzan just bolted inside. "Hey, wait!" Did Tarzan hear something? Hughes hadn't, but he hadn't really been listening either. He hefted his pickaxe to his side and out of the way of stabbing himself on its business end before moving to catch up to the man, scrabbling rather noisily at the loose rocks in his way, but relatively managing to get by without accident. Unfortunately, he was left rather far behind.
