Mifune rounded the corner, and came across...something. He wasn't quite sure what to make of it. One of his superior officers was affixing colorful papers and paint to the walls. That seemed somewhat odd, to say the least.

"What are you doing?" he asked bluntly.

Gorobei's head turned from his work to meet Mifune with a wide smile. "I'm decorating the ship, of course! It has been a bit dreary in here lately, hasn't it? I fear I've been slacking on my duties." He was laying it on a little thick with the dramatics, but that's how Gorobei got to know people who looked a little angrier than most.

The man looked familiar, and it wasn't just the scowl that kind of reminded him of Hijikata. Gorobei was sure that he had seen him around the ship once or twice, but he still was coming up blank when trying to think of a name to match the face.

"I'm sorry, I have unfortunate slips from my memory now and then. Have we met formally yet?"

"I don't think so," he said. "Yojimbo Mifune. One of the cooks."

'Decorating'? Mifune was of course familiar with the concept, but it was the last thing he'd have expected from an officer of a dread pirate vessel such as this one.

"Ah. A cook." Gorobei smiled, reaching out a hand in greeting. "I'm Gorobei. A boatswain. Glad I didn't forget you. The last thing I need to do is offend one of the cooks."

Turning back to his work, Gorobei dug around in one of the bags filled with colorful fabric. "I don't suppose you'd like to join me? This way, you'll get a choice in the color that you'll have to see every time you walk through the halls."

Komachi came bouncing down the corridor towards Gorobei, her eyes widening at the amount of stuff he'd managed to collect together. This looked like being very fun arts-and-crafts times - and he'd started without her! Not fair!

He had his back to her, working on the wall, so she thought maybe she could surprise him, which would do to get back at him for not waiting for her. Komachi broke into a run for the last few yards to where Gorobei was standing, and jumped him, with a yelp of "You're having fun without me, Gorobei?"

Spinning around just in time to catch Komachi with one of his arms, Gorobei shouted back, "Never without you, Komachi!" It was good to see her again. Gorobei had been worried.

"I was just getting the supplies ready. I thought that if I had them all out by the time you were here, we could spend more time talking and less time organizing. So," he set Komachi down and then sat down to be able to talk to her at her height level, "What is this I hear about training?"

Komachi giggled as Gorobei caught her - she ought to have known she wasn't going to catch him by surprise that easily.

When he put her down, she dragged one of the bags of fabric towards her and started rummaging through it as they talked. "About training? You should come and watch sometimes, Gorobei, I'm getting good now!" That might be a slight exaggeration, but Komachi was proud of the progress she was making with Jenka.

"Getting good, hm?" Gorobei started going through the same bag Komachi was digging in and pulled out a few orange-colored fabrics. "What do you think is the Captain's favorite animal?" he asked himself. "I bet it's an air animal, yeah?"

The few fabrics he found were held up to the wall, and Gorobei admired their contrast against the color in the dreary hallway. "We'll need some paints."

After a few moments arranging cloths and finding paints, Gorobei changed the subject back to Komachi, his way of trying to hide his concern and act nonchalant. "So, refresh my memory, what kind of training were you doing again? Swords or hand-to-hand or something entirely different?"
