It wasn't like Utena to avoid a situation she knew she'd have to deal with eventually. And she did know--she and Anthy had way too much history not to confront each other sooner or later. But since she'd found herself on the 4423, and seen with her own eyes that Anthy was safe (and that she'd been making friends, all on her own, just like Utena had always hoped she would!), she hadn't really known what to say ( ... )

Anthy hesitated in the doorway a little before she finally closed the door behind her. That dear, familiar voice was always so sure and strong, it was natural for Anthy to want to fall into the habit of obeying its lead. But no- she had to collect herself.

It was still hard to look at Utena. Only Utena looked like Utena. There was just an essential Utena-ness about her that wasn't found in other people. Her presence always seemed a very sudden change, like a gust of wind that rearranged all of Anthy's thoughts.

And her hair- Anthy had missed that hair. It was such a rare color, the pale pink of an old fashioned rose, with the faintest silvery pale highlights. Anthy had always thought it was the prettiest hair she had ever seen. It would be truly be a shame to dye it, but there really wasn't any other way.

She took a deep breath. She needed to stay focused. She had come here for a reason. "We need to talk," she said.

The way Anthy addressed her came as a little bit of a surprise--no "Miss Utena", no carefully-worded requests. A statement. Utena was inclined to take it as a good thing, though--she'd hated seeing the way Anthy used to bow to everyone else's will, and humble herself all the time. Still, it was just the slightest bit unsettling, because Anthy coming here and being so direct meant something big was probably up.

"Of course," she said, with only a hint of the grief she'd been struggling with lingering in the lines of her smile. Anthy had always had a soothing presence, and at the same time, something about her made Utena want to be strong for her sake. To be her prince... She didn't want to burden Anthy with her own pain. Anthy probably had enough on her plate.

She waved to the only chair in the cabin, already seated on the edge of the bed herself. "What did you want to talk about?" she asked.

Anthy walked slowly to the chair Utena gestured to and automatically sat the lady-like way they taught young girls, knees together and the ankles to one side. It had been a strange experience the first time she had sat on the counter in front of Cimorene, kicking her feet a little in the air while she talked. She had felt positively wild with rebellion, although no one would have guessed. But this was formal sitting, and Anthy didn't feel comfortable any other way just yet ( ... )
