Heihachi winced at the noise, but he was also having a lot of trouble containing his grin. In his hands he held the covered tray that they'd stopped by the kitchen for that contained the efforts of his and Gorobei's hard work - the stew, which had turned out better than expected. It was possible that Cimorene had found it and added her particular magical touch, or perhaps it was just a fluke.

Since Souji was still getting used to the heels it had made more sense for Heihachi to carry it, but now he handed it over to Souji. "Here you go, Miss Mitsuba. Don't trip now."

Although all things considered, he was pretty sure Hijikata was going to be more interested in Souji's dress than the food.

Souji accepted the tray with a smile that effectively hid any of the apprehension he was feeling. He'd managed to make it this far without any serious problems... the shoes were not terribly practical for walking in, but he hadn't fallen or twisted an ankle yet, and he didn't think he'd be walking in them for very much longer. "Thank you. I'll be sure not to."

He was, quite frankly, far less worried about tripping than he was about what Hijikata's reaction would be. Getting himself wrapped up in this plot had been fun, but now he was seriously starting to wonder weather the strategist would really see any humor in it.

Hijikata wasn't expecting visitors.

He rarely did, really. It came with having an offputting personality--sane people didn't typically want to be around him, and so made no effort to be unless they had no other choice. So the knock on his door came as a surprise; he turned to face the door, regarding it with some suspicion (though if it were someone trying to harm him, they probably wouldn't have bothered trying to get his attention first).

Couldn't be Souji--Souji never knocked. That alone made the prospect of a visitor less interesting and pleasant... Sighing in mild annoyance at his studies being interrupted, he took a drag from his pipe.

"What is it?" he asked, curtly.

On the off-chance that the man might recognize his voice and not come to the door, he decided to use one of his many voice impressions he had in his repertoire. He wasn't sure if Hijikata had heard his Miss Rini voice yet, so he decided not to use it, just to be sure.

Deciding to copy the voice of his old teacher, which was a little rusty, truth be told, Gorobei answered Hijikata's question. "I found a gift for you out in the hallway, sir. I thought you might like it before someone else comes along. It's from a person named 'Souji.'"

He tried to muffle a few quick coughs; he was really out of practice. He hoped Hijikata would take the bait anyway. He didn't want to ruin the surprise by having Souji drag Hijikata outside his room. It wouldn't be the same.
