Is it possible for a person to rationally decide to end their own life? Under what circumstances? Suicidal people (in the U.S. at least) who try to kill themselves are almost always prevented from doing so on the grounds that they must be depressed or suffering from some sort of psychological trauma and are therefore not in their right mind when ( Read more... )

DNR Orders (Do Not Rescussitate) came up, along with a case in which a man who suffered a massive stroke, had limited mobility and could not communicate effectively, either verbally or through writing stopped eating. He was on antidepressants and chemically, he was fine. He just didn't want to live anymore. The medical proxy, his mother, wanted a surgeon to insert a feeding tube. He resisted efforts to do this and none of the surgeons on staff would agree to it. I'm actually not sure how the case ended because he was transferred to another hospital. Most of the class seemed to think that the man's wishes should have been respected.
