Overheard in the NEWT Housewitchery seminar, mid-morning Friday 11 September 1942

"And so, the Malfoys' people among the Gryffindors have even got them nearly under control, or as good as, if Jeremy Wood is the only hold out. I think it's really scary... basically the only people left who speak the truth are people like Wood. We've as good as lost the war."

"Oops!" Melly Merriweather chirped. "I didn't mean to let that boil over. Sorry about your skirt!"

The girl glared at her and coughed, making a sound that was a little like 'witch'. "That's just fine, Miss Merriweather! Don't mind me!"

"I'm sure she doesn't," Felicity Greengrass said, shaking her head. "I wouldn't if I were her."

"Well, good then," the girl said. "It's not as though I was saying anything important that might actually matter."

"Or, more importantly, anything true." Felicity rolled her eyes.
