The Ender's Game debate (aka late to the party movie ramblings)

Dec 20, 2013 21:20

I know I’m WAY behind on this controversy, but I just got some free time and I needed to get this off my chest:
I really wish that all the self-righteous social justice warriors who demanded a boycott of the movie Ender’s Game because of Orson Scott Card’s anti-gay statements had done the same for the movie Blue Jasmine.

For those who don’t know, ( Read more... )

fandom, movie, geekery, feminism, gay rights

They only get upset about something when it suits their agenda. Kind of strange how that works.

The irony is that Rob Lowe today sounds like he's grown up a lot since then.

I saw a documentary of Woody Allen's jazz group European tour, and he was being bossed by his wife Soon-Yi (the "child" you describe) like you WOULDN'T BELIEVE. They've been married for over 20 years now? I think things aren't as cut and dried as you describe.

That being said, I believe the boycott of OSC to be completely unconscionable.

The fact that she eventually had him whipped (if the documentary is to be believed) doesn't make what he did any less creepy or wrong. She was underage when their relationship started (I HIGHLY doubt he waited for her 18th birthday to molest her), he was in an obvious position of power/authority over her that makes consent dubious at best, and he betrayed the trust of his wife by using their marriage to gain access to her adopted daughter. Also, Allen's biological son cut ties with Allen over this because he viewed Sun-Yi as his SISTER and saw what his father did as a disgusting betrayal. The fact that his own child viewed Sun-Yi as a sister meant nothing to him. That is sick.

Basically, I don't care that she eventually grew up to marry him (and appeared to have him whipped in one documentary that was intended to make Allen look good and reinforce his "lovable nebbish" schtick). It's still wrong for a middle aged man to bang his underage step-daughter.

As I commented on EW.com, it's easier to be a cocaine-snorting pedophile in Hollywood than an out-of-the-closet Christian.

It's rare that I say somebody at Slate has it exactly right, but here it is:

Maybe this is showing my age, but I recall people calling for boycotts of Woody Allen over the issue with his step-daughter back in the mid-to-late 1990s. Whenever it was he married her. It was all over the place then. It appears that a few people are still boycotting him for it, but I'm guessing the issue is much like Polanski; long ago and far away and so no one cares. I doubt anyone will care about boycotting Card 10 years from now either.

Woody Allen is a slimeball. I've never watched a movie of his (not even Annie Hall)

Ditto. I had no interest in him previous to hearing about his peccadillo and even less afterwards.

I had seen a few Roman Polanski films before, but I've actively boycotted his films in recent years.

I have watched a few of his films because his filmwork is excellent and he's created some classics that can't be ignored. But I won't pay to see them. And I wish he would be arrested and extradited. No matter how brilliant some of his work is, I just can't ignore the crime.
