Chapter 3

The light was still on.

Nino blinked and searched for his phone beside his pillow and peered at the screen. It was 3 am.
He groaned and rolled onto his side, tried to get himself back to sleep but he couldn’t. The sound of the pencil running on the page was low though, but in the silence of the night, it was the only sound Nino could hear except the buzzing sound of the lamp beside his bed.

And somehow, it was disturbing.

Ohno was still awake, Nino noticed when he opened his eyes half-way and found himself looking at Ohno’s back. The sound didn’t stop, and Nino couldn’t help but ask.
“Still awake?”
It wasn’t a question, and Ohno didn’t need to answer, but he still did anyway, and he turned a little to look at Nino’s sleepy face.
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“Important project.”
Nino closed his eyes again. It had been two months since Ohno had joined the Art club. He got many attention because of his art skill, and he was becoming really popular in their school. There were even his own place at the school’s exhibition, and Nino knew it was very difficult to have that honor, especially when Ohno was just a new student. Nino never admitted it though, but he could feel that he had a kind of admiration towards this boy for his talent, because art was never Nino’s thing and would never be.

After that incident, Ohno never mentioned about joining the Music club again. The older boy didn’t talk about it. He just said he lost his interest when Aiba asked him why, but they all knew better. Nino could feel the guilt nagging at the back of his mind whenever he thought about it. Although he really did not want Ohno to stay around him all day, with the way he said it, he thought, he should’ve hurt Ohno somehow. However he never in a million years would bring himself to say sorry to Ohno, Nino winced. It would never happen, because he still hated this boy. And now, after two months of living together, he had one more reason to hate Ohno: the way Ohno made his heart’s rate quicken was annoying, and Nino definitely hated this fact also.

“It’s too bright,” Nino grunted disapprovingly when he threw his blanket over his head. He heard Ohno mumbled something close to ‘sorry’, but he knew clearly Ohno must’ve been concentrated back on his work, so he sighed. Ohno was great at focus on something, that is, he would never be aware of his surrounding when he immersed into his own world. Nino had discovered that much about this boy, since he had caught Ohno sit still for nearly an hour without answering any of his questions once. When Ohno snapped back to life, he looked as lost as he always was and Nino just gave up.

Nino hated it when he had to think about Ohno too much recently - but it naturally came to his mind whenever he had free time, and that was why Nino had to join the baseball team to make himself no more ‘free time’. Nino hated it when Ohno didn’t seem to notice Nino’s hatred towards him, and he was still being such a sweet and patient brother. Ohno was a natural heart-warmer, Nino knew that, but the stubborn part of him still denied that he liked Ohno’s silence company sometimes. When Nino was tired and didn’t want to talk or share his feeling to anyone, Ohno was always there - like a shadow in their shared room, and Ohno listened, although Nino didn’t really talk about anything. And Ohno always seemed understanding.

Nino shook his head, tried to wipe away those thoughts because he felt like some kind of new affection he had for the old boy had been born, and it scared him. He didn’t know where all that came from - Ohno didn’t really do anything specially, he just was there and being Ohno. He treated Nino exactly like his little brother and indulged Nino as much as he could, and he bore any of Nino’s cold attitudes towards him. It made Nino wonder. It made Nino confused. And more than that, it made Nino hope.

He didn’t know what he was hoping for, though.

Turning and tossing on his bed, Nino didn’t know his action had earned Ohno’s attention. Ohno looked over to Nino’s bed and saw a lump of Nino’s head under the blanket. The older boy smiled softly and put down his pencil. He came to Nino’s bed and fixed the blanket, pulled up the part that had fallen onto the floor. Then he came back to his seat and continued his work. He would never know that his simple action had left the other boy staying awake the rest of the night with a painfully pounding hearth in his ribcage, and accompanied by the fear that his older brother could hear it clearly in the silence of the night.

“That’s called love!” Aiba exclaimed thoughtfully, and Nino couldn’t help but rolling his eyes at his best friend with the most disgusted look on his face.
“Masaki,” Nino said slowly “We are brothers.”
“Not blood-related,” Aiba chirped, and Nino knew that Aiba had a point. He had considered about this before, but no, how could it happen anyway? He hated Ohno, that was for sure, and he hated everything about  that boy. But what was this weird thinking about him every night, what was this heart-pounding painfully every time they touched, what was this overwhelming warmth when Ohno looked into his eyes?
Nino had no idea what they were, but he knew one thing for sure. It could never be love.
So he just sighed at Aiba, who was looking at him hopefully.
“Still,” He shrugged, and Aiba looked disappointed “Look, this is not those sappy novels you read, okay? This is real life. And there’s no way… no, Masaki. You know that I hate him!!”
Nino raised his voice at the last sentence, and he suddenly noticed Aiba’s stillness - Aiba’s widened eyes were fixed at the classroom door. When he followed Aiba’s stare and caught the sight of a person standing at the threshold, he froze.

Ohno was there, and he must’ve heard Nino’s words.

Ohno looked puzzled, his eyes were showing nothing but pure shock. Nino’s heart wrenched, he didn’t mean that, no, he… Did he hate Ohno that much? But even he did, he still didn’t want to see that shock written on Ohno’s face, didn’t want to see Ohno’s sudden stiffness. He didn’t want to… he thought, and before he could open his mouth to somehow fix this, Ohno had managed to form a smile.
That same smile whenever he realized Nino’s coldness towards him. His same smile when Nino knew Ohno could sense the hatred Nino had for him, but Ohno still wore it on his face because he wanted Nino to be happy.
“You forgot your bentou this morning,” Ohno said with a scary calm voice, and even Aiba wondered if he already heard it or he was just coincidently spacing out when Nino was saying those “I hate you” words. “So Mom told me to bring it to you.”
Nino couldn’t say anything, he was still in a daze when Ohno just smiled after saying that,  then he approached the two boys and put the bentou on Nino’s table.
“I’ve gotta go,” Ohno said, and with a small nod at Aiba, he turned away and left, as quiet as he had come. Nino couldn’t utter a word until Ohno had disappeared. Nino stared at the bentou on his table with an unreadable look. Aiba sighed and took out his bentou, started to munch on his sandwich without saying anything more. But Nino knew what Aiba wanted to say. Why are you so stupid, Aiba’s furtive look at him was saying so, and Nino wanted to snap back. He wanted to yell, wanted to burst out, simply he wanted to just explode. He didn’t want to feel like this - restless, helpless, uneasy, and more than that, something akin to heartbreaking was also there.

Nino knew he hated Ohno, but there was one more thing he didn’t know, that the line between hatred and love was so thin.

And he felt like fallen.
