Chapter 4
Ohno never talked about the incident afterwards.
Nino tried to mention it many times though, he wanted to somehow tell Ohno that he didn’t mean it - he didn’t mean to hurt Ohno’s feeling like this, but Ohno just cleverly changed the topic every time. Ohno would continue to act as sweet as ever, and he was still a great brother, but Nino could sense there was a line between them now. Whenever they were alone together in the same room, there was always that tightness in the air, that thickness of the silence and that uneasiness between them. Ohno would always be quiet, just focused on his homework and then his project, and he didn’t talk much. Nino felt like Ohno was restraining himself from talking to Nino. And this absolutely was making Nino angry, because he hated this kind of treatment. He also hated when Ohno refused to listen to Nino’s explanation and just continued to do his work, or sometimes he replied with just a few words and left the conversation just like that.
A week or two went on the same way, and it was when Nino decided that enough was enough.
He decided to confront Ohno that night, when there were only two of them at home - their parents were out for a romantic dinner - and Ohno was still acting like a lost puppy refused to talk to Nino again. Pretended to smile, pretended to be happy. And it was one more thing about Ohno that Nino hated. And he hated it so much that it was too annoying for him to bear.
“Satoshi,” Nino tightened his lips. He was lying on his bed while Ohno was still sketching, and the way of Ohno’s sudden stiffness with his call showed him that Ohno sensed the change in his voice. “We need to talk.”
“Yeah?” Ohno barely answered and didn’t raise his head up, and Nino hated it. He wanted Ohno’s attention on him. And now.
“Look, I’m sorry, okay?” Nino hastily said, gave Ohno no chance to change the topic since he said it directly.
“Hm… What for?” Ohno said, his hand didn’t stop but Nino could see that Ohno wasn’t drawing smoothly anymore. Nino knew Ohno was also thinking.
“The other day. I said… I didn’t mean that, really. I just…” Nino faltered.
Ohno sighed and finally, he stopped moving his hand and turned to look at Nino. Nino’s face reddened involuntarily.
“It’s fine,” Ohno said, as low as a breath. However he looked nothing close to ‘fine’. “I don’t mind.”
“You do,” Nino accused, and Ohno looked at him in surprise “I mean, you do mind, don’t you? I’m sorry, I’m such a brat…”
It was the very first time in Nino’s life he called himself a brat. But he barely cared about it right now, because he needed to fix this. No matter how much he hated Ohno, he didn’t want Ohno to hate him. It was for sure.
“Nino,” Ohno sighed, and Nino frowned “I really don’t.”
And Nino kept his mouth shut after that, then Ohno continued, his hand came to smooth the paper of his sketch book.
“I know that… Well, I always know that you don’t like me much. Since the first time, you know. I’m not dull or something. But… you’re right feeling it that way. You don’t like strangers come and take your mom away, right?”
Ohno stopped, as if he had been waiting for Nino to answer, but Nino didn’t, so he continued with a sad smile.
“I was just trying to show you that, you didn’t… you won’t lose your mom. You had a new family instead.”
Nino swallowed the sudden lump in his throat.
“And… it turned out that I failed, huh,” Ohno said sadly.
“No. You...” Nino said with a rush, “I mean, no. You didn’t... fail, I guess.”
“Really?” Ohno looked at Nino’s face, a slight smile formed on his lips and Nino could feel the pressure at his chest had slowly faded away. Ohno wasn’t faking this smile, and it was what really important right now.
So Nino just nodded, and found himself smiling a little too. Ohno’s smile turned into a grin when he saw Nino smiling back at him. He said cheerfully.
“You know, I think you’re much friendlier now, compared to the first time we met.”
“Am I?” Nino replied, his voice raised in surprise.
“Yes.” Ohno nodded and with a bright smile, he added “I like Nino like this.”
Nino couldn’t help but feel his face reddened and his heart beat surprisingly fast in his chest, like it was going to burst out of his ribcage. He couldn’t help himself grinning like an idiot, when he heard that Ohno didn’t hate him - he even liked him. This fact brought warmth to Nino’s heart, and he didn’t know if he could call it happiness, because now he felt like every burden and pressure he had been feeling last whole week had disappeared, and now there was only Ohno’s smile that had a meaning. He wanted to shout again, but this time, because he couldn’t hold back the excitement, because Ohno liked him. Ohno liked Nino even when Nino hated him.
Somehow, Aiba’s words suddenly sneaked into Nino’s mind.
‘It’s called love.’
And Nino froze. There was no way this could be love, right? They were brother. They were something closer than just friends.
But was it enough for Nino, to stay like this with Ohno for as long as he could?
It was enough for now, Nino decided, and he wasn’t going to worry about this, because he just wanted to enjoy this moment with Ohno a little longer.
