I grew up performing in those shows (mostly playing piano) and it is amazing how painfully (for the audience) deluded some girls are about their singing ability.
EDIT, cause that looked sexist -- In my experience, guys didn't sign up to sing, but some did jam out distorted power chords, deluded about their talents as well. (I'm told I did well -- tho that was mostly by Mom)
There were some girls with gigantic delusions. But there was a boy singing "I'm Still Standing" that made me lean over to Cynthia and say that Elton John was spinning in his grave.
We had a talent show in the 6th grade and Becky and I memorized and recited (more than acted sadly) the classic "Who's on First" routine. It may not have been brilliant, but at least it was different.
