The wording of that article confuses me. Can it really be a "rumor" if it's been "officially" canceled?

I suppose if the press release hasn't got out yet.

Someone can easily start a rumor that something has been officially canceled, yes.

Everything about it is a rumor, including the word "official". The only official thing would be a press release or something like that from ABC.
Also, don't believe everything anything you read online.

They still have 7 more episodes to air. Like it's already been said, they have until January to make a decision. I'll only trust an announcement from ABC. Until then, they can be sure of the backlash waiting for them if they make such an announement.
