i think that using a car to try to get from brooklyn to nj so that you arrive in nj around 5 pm is asking to be caught in pretty awful rush hour traffic. of course, once you are in brooklyn, depending on where you're going in nj, you don't have to drive through manhattan to get there -- you can take the verrazano bridge to the garden state pkwy or the njtp, or a host of other nj roads, and if you're on the road toward nj by 330 pm or so, the traffic shouldn't be too awful. i tend to have really good luck getting nj to brooklyn directions from google maps ( ... )

"Where in New Jersey?" (approximately, of course) is actually relevant to this question.

Yes that's the key question. Also relevant is what time do you expect to make it to NJ.

Sorry! Bergenfield is the place, and it's northish. I'd like to get to NJ no later than 5pm if possible.

Ooops. Bergenfield, which is northerly, as I understand it.

the easiest way to go is to take the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the West Side Highway to Canal Street and then take the Holland Tunnel.... but it'll be slow and trafficy.

If you don't want to sit in traffic then I definitely recommend parking in NJ and taking the Path train in. You can get to the F train really easily from the Path.
