I decided to celebrate my new computer-having state by watching Children of Earth. Yes, all of it.

What?! )

I didn't even watch the last episode. I still might - I think we've still got it recorded - but I let the sibling watch it without me, because I really don't want to. I was steadily losing interest from the beginning of Children of Earth, and then when they killed Ianto, I was about ready to stab something.

I know, right? At the Comic Con Torchwood panel Julie Gardner actually said they killed Ianto to give Jack more angst AS IF THAT MAKES IT BETTER. Ugh. I hate Jack and his angst, they bore me.

The problem is that I think RTD et all saw Torchwood as a vehicle for John Barrowman, whereas a lot of fans saw it as an ensemble show. Now 3/5 of the ensemble is dead and well... fans are pissed, but RTD doesn't get why because for him the show was always about Jack and his special special pain.

I actually thought Tosh and Owen's deaths were surprising but very well done. I then assumed that CoE would keep Jack/Ianto/Gwen together, while adding one or more new members to the Torchwood team. Because I assumed that the show is about a TEAM. But apparently I was wrong, and Torchwood is really about RTD enjoying how pretty Barrowman looks while crying.

I also had the uncharitable thought that RTD pulled a 'break the cutie' on Jack because Stephen Moffatt is the creator of Jack.

At the Torchwood panel it really sounded like RTD wanted Barrowman on the show and Jack was basically written for Barrowman, so I'm not sure how much of a Moffatt creation Jack actually is. Although I guess happy Jack can be attributed to Moffatt, but then RTD's aforementioned love of crying Jack took over.
