My Novembers are busy too, which is why it's taken me 6 years to try again. I remember the first time I did this, I was sitting on my mom's couch on Thanksgiving typing away on my laptop. I kinda ignored my family that year even though I was in the room.
You can always pick your own month, and have your own private NaNoWriMo, it's not quite the same, but I've been reading the book "No Plot, No Problem!" which was written by one of the founders. The very first NaNoWriMo was in July with just him and 20-odd of his friends. He claims they chose November after that first time, because of the weather and darkness keep you indoors anyway. But he also mentioned that there is a built in 4 day weekend toward the end to give you a chance to catch up. That, of course, only works if you don't have to deal with family. I think January might work better. The holidays are over, everyone is partied out and doesn't want to force you to attend events, it's still cold and dark, and you get one extra day (compared to November's 30).

I "won", 50000+ words. Don't know that I'm really fond of how it turned out. I did reach the end of the story by skipping lots of description and exposition and just writing things that moved the plot. There is a full plot line, but not much else. It makes it a bit stark.
Perhaps if I get to editing it. I'll like it better when I add things and expand characters.

My Novembers are ALWAYS too crammed full of other things (especially this year) to attempt NaNoWriMo, even though I've wanted to for ages.
