Finding Someone to Carry Her, Rose/Ten II, PG, 835 words

Author’s Notes: Credit to Joss Whedon and the Firefly team for the quote that I partly paraphrased in the title and referenced in the fic.

Excerpt: She’s been part of a pair ever since she took a hand in a basement and ran. She still hasn’t figured out any other way to be.

I'm just going to resoundingly answer this question with a "NO!"

This fluff did not come easy. Damn fic nearly didn't get posted at all. I wouldn't have minded humour, but none of the prompts I was given quite lent themselves to that in my mind. Angst would have made me much happier. Is that an oxymoron?

Anyway, thanks for reviewing.

You're right, it is an inane moment, but so sweet all the same. Definitely with that sense of hope without being OTT. And it's a good demonstration of the new dynamics between TenII & Rose, now more partners than before.

The mention of the TARDIS in the past tense looks like it almost breaks him.

I don't know if you count as canon RTD's statement that they're given a piece of TARDIS coral to grow their own TARDIS, but it's moments like this that make me glad he said it at all. Still, I suppose even if they don't have time and space, they still have weird aliens invading...

Thanks for the comment.

I like that Rose and the part-human Doctor aren't likely to have quite the same dynamic as before. I love Rose/Ten a lot, of course, but they'd never have been equals, and that bothers me. I like that, as you say, they're now more like partners than they were.

The thing about the full-Time Lord Doctor giving them a piece of TARDIS coral is actually a deleted scene on the DVD, so I sort of tend to pick and choose whether I take it as canon. It didn't actually appear in the show, but I'm aware that it easily might have done, you know? Even if it was canon, though, there would still be a number of years before they'd have a fully-grown TARDIS. It would be so difficult for the Doctor to be grounded for that long, even knowing he could eventually get back out among the stars.

Beautiful story! I loved “It wasn’t never about the space travel or whatever.”

I'm trying to think of the Firefly quote... and it's just not coming to me. Which episode was that from? Was it 'The Message'?

Thank you! I'm very happy to hear that you liked it.

Yep. It's from The Message, spot on. The actual line is: "If you can't run, you crawl. And if you can't do that anymore, you find someone to carry you." I might be ever so slightly paraphrasing, since I can't remember for sure, but that's close enough.

Oh. This. This was just gorgeous. The Doctor and Rose can be the Doctor and Rose no matter where they are, I love them so much :) Thanks for sharing.

:) Thank you. Yeah, they don't need a TARDIS to be brilliant (though, you know, it'd still be nice. I'd like a TARDIS myself if one was on offer ;) ).

I liked how she used the sunset to ground them both at the end. The last line of the story was very lovely.

And you don't need a TARDIS to get oneself into trouble at all.
