Navel-gazing at its worst

I'm sorry, I don't usually do this, but I'm feeling weird and I need to write about it.

It's very self-absorbed, so feel free to ignore it.

Not feeling like yourself sucks. It will drive you crazy. Personally, I'd vote for keeping the hair just long enough to get through interviews. And maybe, just possibly, long enough to make a first impression at a new job.

Then go back to being you.

Hair isn't that trivial an issue, really. As you've experienced, it is one of the first things people use to label you - accurately or not.

Much as it pains me to say it, because I tend to love big curly hair (on other people - mine has no curl whatsoever):

Go with what makes you feel right. You already know the potential drawbacks, but what the hell.

Maybe it'll end up being your edgy trademark.

Who knows?

I can't really tell you what to do about it (although I think MCH's suggestion sounds like a good one); I just wanted to say how much I admire the thoughtful and articulate way you've voiced your concerns. This is something I've wondered about myself, especially this summer when I shaved my head for the first time and also recently, thinking about embodiment/identity/enactment/subjectivity/surfaces and interiority and stuff for school. Plus tonight I happened to stumble across this article while looking for something else:
* Shame and Glory: A Sociology of Hair
* Author(s): Anthony Synnott
* Source: The British Journal of Sociology, Vol. 38, No. 3 (Sep., 1987), pp. 381-413
* Published by: Blackwell Publishing on behalf of The London School of Economics and Political Science

I haven't read it yet but it looks pretty nifty.

if hairstyles weren't still considered important in the community, "lesbian haircuts" wouldn't exist :P unfortunately, it's a reality, not a great one but it's still there.

i think in time you won't notice a difference so much, it's been awhile since you've had long hair right? and maybe it does suit you better and people are treating you different because you look good and not because you look straight? neways, give yourself some time and then decide if you're ok with accessorizing appropriately when you don't want to feel so invisible or if the hair must come off!

i for one love the short hair but i'm very curious to see the new do :)
