Mick St. John felt a surge of anger run through his veins as he heard someone moving around in his apartment. He pulled himself out of his freezer carefully, letting the scent of the person come to him.
As he started to regain his senses from the fog of his recent sleep, he began to realize that two people were in his apartment. A stationary figure that was sitting in the living room, apparently eating a sandwich of ham and cheese from a deli around the corner, was Beth Turner.
The other person moving in the apartment in rapid speed was aimlessly looking through everything. Mick could tell it was Josef, who was apparently bored from waiting. Mick could also tell that they had both been in the apartment for about an hour.
Mick heard Josef and Beth talking about some movie that they had both seen. He threw on a dark button down shirt, and a pair of black slacks.
Mick made himself calm down, and not be angry because of the invasion of his sleep. He was sure they both had good reason to let themselves into the apartment, or at least Beth probably had a good reason at least.
Mick walked into the apartment where Josef had stopped searching through things and was sitting down in the chair. Josef had poured himself a glass of blood, and handed Mick a second glass. “About time you woke up.” Josef smirked before he took a long sip.
“I’ve been up for four straight days working on a missing person case. The least you can do is let me sleep.” Mick heard himself grumbling before he took a long drink from the glass. He drained it, and refilled it, and sat down on the opposite end of the couch from Beth.
“Oh, the Aurora Stardust case how did that go?” Beth asked, after finishing the last bite of her sandwich. She had reluctantly gone away with Josh for the weekend to San Francisco. She had gotten back in Los Angeles two hours ago, yet she felt like she had been gone for a whole year. It seemed for some reason that she had missed a bunch of important news stories, and she didn’t like that feeling. This is one of the reasons she had come over to Mick’s shortly after she had unpacked, because she was sure he could help her catch up. The rest of the information she could get from Buzzwire.
Another reason that she had come over was because being away made her realized how much she missed Mick. She seriously was beginning to think that despite any feelings she had for Josh, she would throw them all away so she could be with Mick.
“It didn’t end as well as I hoped. I found her, an hour after she had been dismembered.” Mick said a trace of sadness in his voice.
Beth took in a breath of surprise, her hand going to her mouth. “That’s terrible, did they find the killer?”
Mick nodded, drinking the second glass of blood in one gulp. He was thirsty.
Mick wondered if he should tell her the details, or if he should shield her. He knew that she worked around murder and crime a lot in her job, but he didn’t want to expose her to something else.
Aurora Stardust and her roommate, Lena Peters, had both been aspiring porn stars, and worked as fluffers for several of the smaller studios as they waited for their big break.
Four days ago, Robert and Susan Scott, Aurora’s Parents, (Aurora’s birth name was Amber Scott but she had had it legally changed on her 18th birthday.) had found Mick’s name randomly in the phone book. He had to agreed to track down their daughter, as they were worried about her since they hadn’t heard from her in a month.
Yesterday, he had finally found Aurora’s apartment after much digging; as it was a little out of the way place in the bad part of town where there seemed to be a million apartments and no names listed for any of them. Unfortunately, he had found both Aurora and Lena in pieces over the apartment. He had called the police from a cell phone, since no one had apparently notified them yet.
The good thing was he was able to catch the killer. He held the man, Jeffrey Todd, a disgruntled Porn lighting guy until the police came. Todd had confessed to everything, but had been shived as he was being transferred to the jail. Todd had apparently step on someone’s foot, and they didn’t appreciate it too greatly.
“Are you just going to sit there, and not tell us what happened?” Beth asked curiously.
Mick poured another glass of blood. “I’m sure you can find out about it at Buzzwire.” He answered, making sure to keep his voice neutral.
Josef chuckled. “You know she’ll pester you till you tell her.” Josef had already found out what happened since it had all been over today’s paper. (Most of it anyway, it didn’t mention Mick by name.) Beth obviously hadn’t had a chance to read since she was out with her boyfriend, doing what ever it was that they did together.
Beth’s curiosity amused Josef greatly, and a playful smile flicked on his face for a millisecond. He watched Mick as he struggled with his usual Mick thoughts.
“He’s right, are you going to tell me?” Beth pleaded jokingly.
The vampires exchanged a look for a brief second; Mick’s uncertainty showing more than he liked, as he still struggled with what he should shield Beth from in life. Even though many years had passed since the kidnapping, he still felt that he had to protect her.
Mick opened his mouth about to say something, but Josef beat him to the punch.
“The killer is dead, that’s all that matters.” He figured it would be easier if he said it than Mick. Josef made sure also that he kept a straight face as he wondered If Beth assumed that Mick had killed the man.
