The Race: Starting Line

Nov 13, 2010 03:12

Everyone participating in the race found themselves waking up in a car with their teammate. On the dashboard was a map of England and a sealed envelope. Over the radio came the familiar voice of one Oliver St. Oldcastle ( Read more... )

Rose woke up with an aching spine. She was curled in an awkward, half-seated position. Her eyes opened slowly, and she let out a groan. For a moment, there was only the soreness. Then came complete confusion. She jolted upright. Rose was inexplicably in the passenger's seat of... something.

The blonde frantically looked to the window. It was clouded with dirt. She turned to the other side, finding Amy Pond asleep behind the oversized steering wheel.

Rose didn't panic- not at first. The house's surprises were becoming the norm. However, Oliver's voice over the radio demolished her resolve. "Amy, Amy!" she demanded. "Listen t' this!"

[OOC: Rose Tyler and Amy Pond will be driving THIS classy piece of work from the Doctor Who episode "The Parting of the Ways."}

"Oh god, my head," Amy mumbled, raising one hand to make sure it was still on properly. Her neck ached something fierce. And as she regained consciousness, she realized it was probably due to the awkward way she'd been curled up in the driver's seat.

... The driver's seat? What was she doing in a car? Oliver's voice snapped her the rest of the way out of her sleep-befuddled state.

"What does he mean, the death of someone we love?" She smacked the radio, addressing it directly, "Oi! What do you mean?"

The radio crackled back into life. "Ah, Miss Tyler. Miss Pond. I'm glad to hear you're both awake," Oliver's voice said cheerfully. "I know you young people today think 'the folks' are such a snooze. But I'm you wouldn't like them to die, would you? Or die again in your case, Rose. You could lose the race, but dear ol' dad and Auntie Sharon would pay the penalty."

Rose's mouth hung open in disbelief. She looked to Amy, then back to the radio. Impossible. Oliver couldn't touch their loved ones at home. He couldn't be that powerful. No, no, no.

She didn't want to believe it, so she refused. "You're bluffin'."

Dean woke with a crick in his neck from where he was slumped over in the Impala's driver's seat, his head pinned in an awkward angle between his shoulder and the window. It was a feeling he'd had first thing after a night's sleep more times than he cared to remember, and he yawned, forgetting for a moment the past months, thinking it was same old, same old, and he and Sam were on a job.

Which was why he reached over to slap Sam in the side, giving a falsely cheery, "Wakey, wakey, Godzilla. Up and at 'em."

He straightened in the seat and peered out, and for a moment there was a sense of confusion, before reality came crashing in again. And then the radio cut in.

"Sam. Dude, wake up. We're getting transmissions from the Vulcan galaxy or some crap."

Sam woke up when Dean smacked him, frowning as he assessed the immediate situation. Okay, so they were in the car, that was pretty standard. But the radio was speaking, in a voice he very much recognized, and that wasn't a good sign.

He leaned foreword and grabbed the envelope on the dashboard, along with the map - opening and reading it as they were instructed by Oliver.

There was a long pause before Sam spoke up.

"Yeah, I have no idea what this means."

"Gimmie that." Dean reached over to snatch it for himself and scanned it a few (several) times, before tossing the paper on the seat next to him. "Yeah, okay, we got Dr. Suess giving us some screwed up kind of scavenger hunt? Are you kidding me? Dude, this is stupid. And we've done some stupid crap before, but I am not doing this."

And by 'this' he meant driving across a country where everyone drove on the wrong side of the damn road for some psycho's fap fantasies. "C'mon, there's no way this crap is remotely legit. I say we get out, and we haul ass for the nearest boat headed somewhere we know." He paused. "Maybe Jamaica. Jamaica sounds good."

And then several things happened. Sam realized that this was a (and probably their only) opportunity to escape the house, but that he'd also be leaving things behind. Things he didn't necessarily want to.

It was so glaringly apparent it was almost painful.

"You heard Oliver. He's got a hostage."

It took a bit for Victoria to finally stir from Oliver's voice coming through the radio, but once she did, she was wide awake and she bolted up in her seat, heart racing.

She was in a car. With no idea how she got there.

She looked to her left. Next to a man that she had never seen before in her life. He appeared to be asleep, and despite her situation, some kind of courtesy caused her to cover her mouth to stop herself from screaming. Victoria turned back to the door and tried to open it.

Locked. Of course.

Frantic, she listened to bits and pieces of Oliver's message before grabbing at the envelope on the dashboard. She read the riddle, but it made no sense, and she tossed it aside before turning back to the man.

"Who are you?!" Victoria demanded, a desperate air to her voice. "What's happening?!"

Tom jolted awake at Victoria's voice. He'd missed the whole radio thing, and disoriented, whipped around. In a succession of quick movements, he turned to her, turned back to press against the door, then realized he was in a car, and turned back.

"Woah woah- calm down." He exclaimed, hands in a defensive 'this is so not my fault' gesture. "I don't know."

Groggy, he rubbed at one eye and realized that he, they, weren't in just any car. They were in his car. But how it got there was anyone's guess.

"I'm Tom." He answered, clearing his throat.

"Victoria," she said impulsively. And then she shut her mouth, thinking about how stupid a move that must have been. Not that she really had time to worry about it, and from looking out the window, they didn't seem to be the only ones in this situation.

And that was when the onslaught of questions poured out of Victoria, despite the fact that he had just said he didn't know what was going on. "How did we get out here?! Why are we here?" She frowned. "Is - is this your car?" she asked.

Victoria remembered the letter and map she'd found on the dashboard and leaned over to pick it up before handing it to Tom. "We - this was on the dashboard when I woke up."

"Yeah, this is my car."

Tom raised an eyebrow and took the papers from Victoria, giving them a once over. None of it meant anything to him, but he had a feeling it was of key importance.

He lets out a slow breath and set them back on the dashboard.

"It's a riddle. I think we're supposed to go...wherever this is."

It wasn't Oliver's voice that snapped Max awake, but he was surprised to find himself in the driver's seat of his red Sunbeam Tiger. His forehead was smashed against the steering wheel; he'd been laying on the horn for who knew how long.

"Hey, my car's back!" Max said happily, ignoring the fact that it really wasn't his car, he'd just stolen it, but that wasn't what mattered. It was then that he became aware of the message coming across the radio, which told him about the envelope on the dashboard. And when he went to reach for it...

"You are Satan," Max said matter-of-factly, recoiling ever so slightly.

Lucifer had woken up to the irritable sound of a horn blaring and had been met, with some surprise, with the sight of this strange looking human laying against the steering wheel. His brow curved very slightly as the thing woke up and he looked around, even more in wonder as to how he got into such a confining contraption and why he wasn't able to just poof out of the situation like so many times before.

"And you're Max." He said as he turned back to the other, looking to the envelope and tearing it open, reading the clue aloud and shrugging. "I have no idea what it means, I don't bother myself with silly human games." He said, tossing the envelope to Max, looking irritated.

Max flinched, but he caught the envelope when Lucifer threw it to him. He was clearly just a little terrified, and though he didn't mean to, he was making a show of it. Then again, he figured that the car was his turf, and if anything happened, he could clearly turn this into a Jets vs. Sharks-style gang fight. It would be great.

He scanned the riddle over, then checked the back of the paper, and glanced at the map. "So - wait - what, is this seriously all we got? Is this like Speed Racer meets the Triwizard Tournament or whatever, because I am not prepared to fight a dragon. Or Voldemort."

Lucifer looked up from his moment of repose and stared at Max, his eyes narrowing very slowly before he pulled a face of complete confusion. Clearly, he wasn't exactly up on his wizardly reading. So he groaned, rubbed the bridge between his eyes and shook his head. "You know... Just..."

The Devil grabbed the clue again and stared it down, waiting for it to reveal its answer before he shrugged and flopped back into the seat. "I spent the last few thousands of years trapped in a box, I have no idea what any of these human references could possibly mean."

Nicki awoke sprawled on a small leather seat, his first thought was that he was in a very nice sit-in coffin, like those old people bathtubs. But, no, it was just alittle too big, and he smelt other blood. The first thing he did was smack into the door at very fast speeds, figuring out there was no escape, then the voice came from the radio, it was that nice man from his journal

“Oh hello!! Can it be Lestat that dies?” he asked at the radio, assuming he must now be inside a communicator, somehow, this made sense, and calmed him down “I adore him, can I be there?” his voice perked pleasantly as he leaned at the radio

Eric enjoyed his car. He enjoyed it very much, and it was one of the few material possessions that he even remotely cared about. He did not, however, like sleeping in it. Nor did he like it when other people threw their bodies against its interior.

"Don't do that, please," he said, glancing over at Nicki. It appeared they were trapped in another of the house's games.

He opened the envelope on command, reading the words contained within. He wasn't particularly in any hurry just yet, as there wasn't anyone that Eric particularly 'loved' per say, though he wondered how they would have obtained such people.

"We're going to Stonehedge," he said finally, dropping the note. Any supe would have been able to come to that conclusion, and he glanced at Nicki as he turned the key in the ignition. "You've heard of it, right?

“Stone what?” he made a face, he’d heard of it, just not by that name, he was going to say something else but then the car started. He sort of acted like a cat that had just been woken up by a fog horn, he hit his head off the roof off the car, and realized he couldn’t go anywhere else. He started spewing out babbling, panicking rants in French, pawing at the door handle. This was is, this was how he was going to die. In a giant vibrating communicator

"Stonehenge," he repeated, his foot pressing down on the accelerator. The car sped forward, quickly gaining speed. There didn't seem to be any other cars on the road, which would make this drive less painful, at least.

"It's an ancient burial ground, marked by numerous stones," he continued, his eyes unblinkingly focused on the road.
