You probably already have heard the word "Pokemon" being thrown around, and that's what that little sheep is. There should be a capsule in the bag you were given that you can put it into if you don't want it out. Don't ask how it works, it just works.
And the point of this whole thing, as far as I can tell, is to capture and train them in those capsules. If you had any magical prowess where you were from, or any weapons on you, they're gone, and you're relying on the Pokemon for protection whether you like it or not.
There's plenty of little things that take some figuring out, too, but we'd be here all day if I tried listing off every one of this place's quirks.
[A quick sigh.] They ought to hand out a pamphlet for these things. Explaining it all is ridiculous.

As for getting back home, there is a rumor saying that if you take the badge challenge and collect all the badges, you'll be able to return home, aru. However, no one has been able to collect all the badges yet, so no one knows for sure if that's true.
