One day Mei [pronounced "May"] is outside playing near their large forest, when a strange and turbulent wind suddenly disturbs her frolicking -- leaving her dizzy. Suspicious and clever, the little girl dashes back into her home as the whirlwind follows along. Once inside, she immediately slides the old-fashioned Japanese door closed. A tiny cat-bus is revealed and panics upon being spotted, but it's trapped!
This "kittenbus" turns out to be the child of the same adult Catbus (♂) who transported the sisters through the mysterious hidden world of their neighbor Totoro -- the fabled "King of the Forest". Normally invisible, only children who are pure of heart stand a chance of viewing such things. The movement of full-sized Catbuses create a wind that causes entire rice fields to sway, but this kit only has the power to conjure miniature, untamed whirlwinds (à la Tasmanian Devil). Since the parent knows Mei and with the desire for caramel candy (the item that lured the kitten's curiosity in the first place), a late night trip is arranged.
Mei meets up with kittenbus at her window, who is just big enough for her to fit snugly inside the expandable body of soft fluff. Away the pair go to a vast underground bus station, where a plethora of cat-shaped vehicles (some as big as trains) and hidden forrest dwellers lurk (including soot sprites!). Mei is thrilled to bump into her old friend, Totoro! The biggest surprise is meeting the oldest and largest of the Catbuses, a living passenger liner, that Totoro and many others are set to board. It too, turns out to enjoy caramels! After this unexpected adventure filled night, she is carefully taken home and we witness the spectacle of a sky secretly populated by countless furry ferrymen whose gravity-defying bodies dash at impossible speeds, leaving behind nothing more than gusts and rustling foliage in their wake!
