So, one of the universal perks of working at a coffee shop is coffee shop music. I feel like people constantly bitch about the music at work, but I enjoy tuning it out until something like Tom Waits's Hold On comes on and I can dance around the lobby sweeping and singing loudly ( Read more... )

My brain is super bad about it too. It doesn't help that if left alone I will generally start singing OUT LOUD and not realize it. I have told people that I am in fact like the living version of the dancing flowers from the 1980's. It's not that I'm trying to be oh so quirky, I just really start singing and dancing.

Which makes shit like this even worse. It doesn't help that I sometimes make up lyrics out of boredom.

Yeah, there are songs that I could live without ever hearing again (be glad you missed the 40 year compilation CD thing-it was every song you NEVER WANTED TO HEAR AGAIN being played AGAIN), mostly that 50th version of Hallelujah, but otherwise I'm usually pretty happy about it and sing along in the most obnoxious fashion.

Tom Waits is one of those people that you either think is a genius, or you can't stand him. There is no in-between.

I think he's a God. A lot of people I know don't get it. *shrug*

I seem to only run in the God crowd. That or I meet people who love him in (Insert movie name here). I work with a kid who loves movies and was like "Tom Waits writes songs? I thought he was an actor".

I found out the other way: I was watching a movie with my brother (don't remember the name of it), and I suddenly realized that the guy playing the bartender was Waits.

He's a great actor too. He was amazing in "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus."

Same way for me too. It was Mystery Men. Imagine my surprise.

And you're the second to vote watching Doctor Parnassus for him. I'll try to get on it in the next week.
