El Cid is a cool guy. eh kills Muslims, defrauds Jews, and doesn't afraid of anything.

Seriously though, after finishing El Cantar de Mio Cid I can easily put it in the #1 spot of my favorite hero-epics. Of course, seeing as how the only other one I've read is Beowulf, that probably doesn't say all that much ( Read more... )

The Odyssey is a must, of course. The Iliad and the Aenead are both... meh.

Oh, and I think I've mentioned The Golden Ass to you before. It's... kind of a Roman parody of an epic? Ish? There's also this great medieval french poem called "Silence" (Arthurian era) that I quite liked.
