I largely agree that this is probably a good thing, and seemingly won't get much worse at least, but I needed to point out something: The Muppets may have been a cute movie, but it had almost no actual Muppet people behind it, including Frank Oz, who was Jim Henson's partner from the beginning, and he walked out:
I don't feel great about that. As a diehard fan of the particular blend of innocence and absurdity that stayed the same for decades, even after Jim's death (when the voices changed), I liked The Muppets better than any of the Star Wars prequels, but not by that much.
It seemed more like a "Remember how awesome the Muppets are?" love letter than an actual Muppets film. And they followed the rules that Muppets must follow (never refer to themselves as puppets, etc.). And he didn't walk out. He politely declined to do it. Totally different.
I know it's steeped in nostalgia (Oz had some concerns about that too), but I believe it is intended as a reboot and they will continue to make Muppet movies stemming from it, so...
Yes they mostly did stay true to the Muppet rules, but:
He was involved until he got the script, then he removed himself. It would be like the Beatles developing Abbey Road and when the songs are demoed at the first band meeting, John or Paul says "I don't like what you guys are doing" and goes home.
I don't need to wankishly debate, but I do care enough to share.

FWIW.
