180: Sweet Charity: How Long It Is

Mar 31, 2008 00:05

Not last time but the time before (although I am still totally on my deadline, so there), I signed up for Sweet Charity. The person who won me was adbaculum. Probably everyone who sells herself for charity has a moment of terror when she gets the request, but adbaculum's was actually pretty cool. Basically, she wanted me to rec some vids that might show her why ( Read more... )

First off, let me say that this was a wonderful post, especially since I have been very much in a vid-place lately (am downloading from AMV as I type!). I look forward to checking out some of your examples that I'm unfamiliar with.

Second:

There's a difference between Ulysses and Harry Potter (yes, I know that there are several differences, actually - like, I really don't think Leopold Bloom casts expelliarmus even once)

Crying. Laughing.

I woke up my husband and just had to hand-wave helplessly when asked for explanation.

Would you like to exchange favorite AMV tips? I have great and possibly insane love for AMVs!

Um, my apologies to your husband? (Although, really, we all suffer together; I've been trying to imagine a Ulysses x Harry Potter crossover ever since I wrote that - because, really, Leopold Bloom deserves the chance to cast a few spells, don't you think? - and it is making my brain hurt.)

Here! Have a total rip-off! Erm, Wizard Bloom goes shopping for porn? (So sue me, of course I remember best the bits of Ulysses about book shopping and smut.)

***

Wz Bloom lazily unfurled the top edge of the scroll with the tip of his finger. Simpson's Ars Magica: Index Animalium, edge badly foxed. Glimpsed a corner of the first illumination, snakes writhing together to form a capital ess. Mating knot. Nagini strangling a child. Them Slytherins never change their scales, I tell you, man.

Released the parchment to restore its protective curl.

He moved further down the shelf and lingered a moment: Survival as a Way of Life by that hooker who became famous ( ... )

OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU MORE THAN WORDS CAN EXPRESS OR COMMUNICATE. Seriously, there would need to be, at minimum, a lolcat here for you to understand how I feel. Possibly a series of lolcats.

This is just - it's magic, and I mean that in a totally non-ironic, non-punny way. And you made him a furry. Oh my god, so very perfect. (For some reason, I am now thinking about how much Wz Bloom would love Crimson Spell. Stop, brain! Crossovers can HURT!)

That is such an awesome vid. I mean, okay, I think it maybe should come with a warning label - based on our reaction the first time we watched, perhaps CHOKING HAZARD would be the appropriate one - but, wow, so very worth it. (And doubly worth it if you live in California.)

What was other people's take, btw? I'm so curious, since I can't figure it out myself.

I watched the vid and sorted it away, and then I was really startled when pretty much all the commentary and recs I saw for it described it as Snape angst, sometimes with a fair amount of detail. I watched it again wondering what the hell I was missing, and in fact I still wonder, because that's not what I see. But, hey, we all take something different from art, and I really like the vid I'm watching, and other people seem to like the vid they're watching, so I will not feel bad about missing whatever it is that I'm missing. (I guess, for me, I see it as a Hogwarts-centric or magic-centric vid, and other people see it as a Snape-centric vid, which shouldn't really surprise me; I consistently have problems with promoting objects, ideas, and animals to starring roles over the people who usually belong in them.)

There was a vid made for one of the stories in spn_j2_bigbang and I found it fairly easy to follow, too, since it told the story of the fic and thus I ( ... )

I'm another person who doesn't understand vids (or, more precisely, plot in vids) but this is a great list to help me try, try again. Thanks!

Thank you!

Perhaps we should form a club for people who don't get vids. We could exchange helpless vid commentaries ("I...think it's about Buffy. Yeah, I'm pretty sure about that, anyway.") and offer support to people who share the affliction!

And plot in vids is hard, which is why it can be nice to start with vids that have a very simple central theme. (I'm a big fan of the theme "X and Y are so doing it," but to each her own.)

Oh, brilliant!

And I'm glad to know other people have my problem with the shiny flickering pictures. Also, I will never be able to listen to Madonna again without sniggering.

There are many of us! You are not alone!

I think that may have been precisely what fan_eunice and greensilver intended. I mean, I can just tell that they had some kind of evil plan when they made that vid, and that might be it. Although further research is required. In the form of multiple vid-watchings, I think.

Thank you! And, yes, I am a fan of shiny things being pimped at me. (I do have a real life, but I try not to let it interfere with my love of shiny. Magpies manage, is my theory; probably I can too.)
